Play all the games chronologically up to and including Ocarina of Time and then stop, they just get worse after that.

I find Ocarina of Time boring and overrated but finished Twilight Princess because it's fun enough.

Link to the past is my favourite.

Ocarina of time is regarded by many as THE best game ever, but as we're living in a world where some people actually love Oblivion, this really doesn't tell me much about the game.

I find its reputation is well deserved, certainly don't expect to play anything as good again.

There seem to be 4 reasons a game gets this kind of praise:

1 - it's the hyped sensation of the day and will be forgotten 2 years later(oblivion, modern shooters)

2 - it was their favorite game as an impressionable kid, wouldn't enjoy it as an adult(jrpgs)

3 - they were very influential for gaming as a whole(tetris, mario)

4 - they(objectively?) find it's the best game across genres/everyone's taste(ocarina)

I think that's why you see games like ocarina/mario/tetris topping off game journalists' best game ever charts while reader's charts will more often have final fantasy 7 or call of duty.

Play all the games chronologically up to and including Ocarina of Time and then stop, they just get worse after that.

I found Majora was in the same league as Ocarina, and it's darker and more rpg-ish.

Some codexers have peculiar tastes so since you liked zelda 1 you're likely better off starting with a link to the past as it's basically zelda1++.

Good games, but once you're played one, you have sort of played all of them. Link to the Past, Links Awakening, the original and Ocarina of Time are all good, but after them I found the rest unappealing. Too much of the same.

The Adventure of Link - Great game, probably the hardest (maybe the only real hard one) in the entire series.

A Link to the Past - Like the original game except better.

Link's Awakening - Very similar to A Link to the Past gameplay. Thumbs up.

Ocarina of Time - Don't let the haters fool you. This game was a masterstroke when it came out. It just seems stale looking back because all the 3D versions since then have followed this formula.

Majora's Mask - Probably the most Codexian of the series. It's darker, has the most interesting story, and is a direct sequel to Ocarina. Best of all is the living, breathing town and its inhabitants. They will lie to you, abuse you, and treat you like shit, because you're just some dumb hillbilly they don't know or care about. In the first five minutes you will be beaten up, robbed, hexed, and your best friend (your horse) will be kidnapped right in front of you. The look on poor little Link's deku scrub face after all this almost made me cry. This one is my favorite.

Wind Waker - More of the same except instead of exploring land on a horse you explore the ocean on a boat. Sailing is banal shit boring because it's mostly open ocean. Looks fantastic, like you're playing a cartoon.

Twilight Princess - More of the Ocarina gameplay. It's pretty good. Link is a werewolf. You can do a sword kata/flourish maneuver after you kill an enemy, this never gets old. Final sword fight vs Ganon is awesome.

As others have said, A Link to the Past is even better than the original while following the same formula. Even if you play no other Zelda game, Link to the Past is simply mandatory. It's a great, great game.

Don't read up on it either. If you're not already aware of the game's central twist, then you're in for quite an enjoyable surprise about a third of the way through the game.

Dammit SMA you entered a reply right before I was to make an edit. I still love you though. Yeesh has nothing on you.

Let me add that Ocarina of Time is basically A Link to the Past gameplay in 3D, however the Zelda games are the rare exception where the move to 3D was a benefit. Even though every game after A Link to the Past is a clone (2D or 3D) they may still be worth playing. I'm drunk now so I hope that makes sense.

Majora's Mask is like Ocarina of Time on acid. There isn't much of a story there, but it's better for the lack of one. Play that next; it's fucking fantastic.

Every Zelda game up until Windwaker is, in my opinion, mandatory playing.

A Link to the Past was good back when I first played it, but it was rather long ago. Wind Waker had a nice feel to it, but I don't really remember anything else about it. Twilight Princess was boring. Also, combat was shit. I can't see why anyone could find it entertaining.

I think I've tried them all except the ones on GBA. I've completed most of the ones I've tried. The ones on the old hand held systems were probably the weakest. The ones on the SNES and N64 were probably the best.

But I can't think of one that I didn't enjoy. Obviously the stories are trivial and the gameplay is pretty shallow in all zelda games, but they have some weird appeal that I can't explain.

Ocarina of Time is a childish game but I can honestly say it's the most solid and fun action/adventure title I've ever played. I guess it's easy for haters to hate it since it gets pretty much all the praise in the world next to SMBROS and FF7.

Ocarina of Time is overrated as fuck no matter how you look at it. Wind Waker and Twilight Princess were much better. :M

This. I've always preferred LttP to Ocarina, actually, but then I never did finish Ocarina.

Also, 2D sprites age much better than early-gen 3D.

Insert clever insult here
Never played the 3D ones but since you can handle emulators, after finishing Link to the Past, do try Link's Awakening. I remember it being a pretty sweet game on Gameboy.

The Oracle games for the GBC were good. I actually liked them the most of the 2D Zeldas; not sure how well they'd hold up now, but they're enjoyable games with good dungeon design, varied tasks, bosses and locations and fun gimmicks.

I'm with the small crowd who like TP more than OoT, though I can't really put my finger on why. Just one of those things, I guess; OoT is among the few games I just can't bring myself to play through. I don't even think it's bad, I just can't play through it. Majora's Mask is awesome, though, probably my favourite Zelda game of all.

Going to have to track down an emulator and try out Ocarina and on. Loved the old school installments, didn't keep up with the series post-SNES.

Yeah, of those that i've played they are fine (not hard, but fine) environmental puzzlers with some degree of skill needed. Really nintendo is a fine company for this kind of games.

They're obviously child oriented, but the darker themes of Majora's mask for instance make it worthwhile (the temporal puzzles are also good) even if you're a jaded motherfucker (there was also a very strange and out of place section in Ocarina with zombies, strange because the low quality backgrounds were particularly obvious, out of place because they were going for a very light horror vibe for about 15 seconds.)

^If you're talking about the market section right after you become an adult, it's there just to give you that "WHOA Ganon really fucked shit up while I was sleeping" feeling. The redeads are so slow that you can walk away from them.

On topic, Link's Awakening for the best Zelda experience (play the DX version if you're a colorfag). Majora's Mask for what is probably the weirdest Zelda game. Haven't played the Gamecube / Wii ones so I dunno about them.

I'd say don't give up until you've met Zelda, that seems to be the point where it opens up and you're expected to go exploring.

Minish Cap (GBA), the most underrated game in the series:

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
I personally would recommend A Link to the Past. Also Link's Awakening, but not as much. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are well-designed games, too. Avoid Twilight Princess, the game is terrible; masturbatory design-pornography. The dungeons are noxious. L

Other than that, I don't know. These games were a lot more fun when I was younger. :(

Sound similar to my experience, everyone and their mothers praised OoT but when I actually play it, I always have tendency to quit playing after a while and never go back.

Only played the first two back in the day on the NES -- never owned the other consoles. Adventure of Link is really quite impressive for the time. Experience, leveling up, side quests, towns, etc. Down thrust sword technique 4tw.
