If you think Dark Messiah is anything at all like Ultima Underworld or Arx Fatalis then you clearly have not played any of them and don't know what you are talking about. And yes they were real RPGs. Not even "action rpgs". They had nothing in common with games like Diablo. Can you name any games that are more of an rpg than Ultima Underworld? It was just a first person version of the Ultima series for christ sake, which practically defined the genre. Of course it was re-imagined by the MIT gurus at LGS, but it was very much in the spirit of the Ultima series. It had to be because Origin was bankrolling their projects. I don't see the later games from LGS as the true LGS. They were cynical attempts at pandering to the LCD to make some money and save the company. And it didn't even work. You do realize that Thief was originally intended to be a pure RPG (Dark Camelot IIRC). They were just afraid that an RPG wouldn't sell enough to pay the bills. They needed a title that was cheaper to make. The principals of Blue Sky/LGS were RPG guys.
