I am a big fan of Varscona, that +2 Sword that also does minor ice damage.
You get if after shanking Greywolf.

Varscona is simply the best longsword in the game. Maybe the flaming sword (from Durlag's Tower) is a bit better, I don't remember stats.
It's a +3 Two-Handed Sword you get in Durlag's Tower from the King after you kill him in the "Chess" game...
Great weapon, but cannot use a shield with it.

Nope... I meant 1-handed longsword, not 2-handed (yet +3 2Hsword and Spiders Bane are the two best 2h swords IIRC).

Here it is

It's worse than Varscona anyway - I thought it adds some sweet damage from fire, but it doesn't (well to winter wolves and undead, it can be handy but not reliable).

Merida, again
I liked Varscona better as a weapon. Spider's Bane was better than World's Edge. Personally I always liked to use the cursed berserking two hander on my munchkin runs.

So, are Weimer mods totally outdated by now?
Should I skip the tactics mod and only use Sword Coast Stratagems (II)?
Perhaps still adding Underrepresented Items, and that sort of stuff?

With the EE I can expect a smoother experience with all those intense, AI-enhanced areas, is this really confirmed?
If so I might just go ahead and get it from Gog, despite everything...
I could just ignore the new NPCs and stuff, after all.

Ignore them, and install this

https://github.com/Sampsca/BGEE-Classic-Movies
https://github.com/Argent77/A7-NoEENPCs

and don't play Siege of Dragonspear. It's absolute shit for people who roleplay, and changes the personality of some companions.

I'm sorry guys should have clarified that I only mean to play BG II again.
I really did have lots of slowdowns with my then-heavily-scripted setup.

That's why I'm considering the EE, if it's true that the engine is more capable.

The EE for BG2 is fine. Most of the issues of the EE

  1. New bugs introduced in the EE itself
  2. Horrible UI
  3. Questionable new content
  4. shoving BG2 Engine inside of every EE game

Point 1 has been fixed by the EE creators themselves.
Points 2 and 3 have been fixed by mods
Points 4 only applies to IWD1EE and BG1EE

It's far easier and more convenient to install the 2 to 3 mods to remove the bad stuff, and have the ability to zoom and quickloot, then install 10+ mods on the vanilla BG2 game to have similar QoL features and BugFixes.

If you already own it go with EE. If you're not interested in the questionable new characters install the NoEENPCs mod d1r linked above.

The writing is outrageous, the graphics are bad (I mean locations) and the story is fucking bad. Yet some encounters are quite decent (I mean storming that fort or smth - hard fight after hard fight without resting; pretty nice).

The game still looks worse than the original, imo.
And lets not forget that black void of nothingness on every map border.

If anyone wants to take the time to see how to do a huge mod install check out the YouTuber Zentarin. He's been involved in the BG mod community since the very beginning.

Also I wouldn't say Tactics is outdated just that SCS is much more popular now and they have different design philosophies. Some players are fans of both.

I played both BG1&2 EE last year in October and November

I used several Weimer mods, like NPC mods, but I didnt use SCS or tactics. The games were both fine and stable and provided dozens of hours of expected D&D fun but Im not fastidious with ruleset or graphic changes that EE provides

If you remove all the shit Beamdog created the EE are workable. You need to restore the original cinematics in BG1, get rid of all the new NPCs etc. I wish there was a way to restore the original UI but nobody ever made a mod for that. BG2 came close nothing for BG1.

Well folks it's "officially" on, since I've started to search for and download mods.
Working on a list, which I'll probably submit to the experts here for advice :D

I was thinking about buying BG2EE from Gog.
I know I know.
Expediency has its merits though.

Bought BG2 EE on GOG.
Less than 5 €, I said what the hell, you win.

Will work on that mod list.
I'm starting to realize it'll be even more of a nightmare than the last time.
Micromanaging sub-components is going to be tiresome....

I'm afraid I could use some help still.
I'm feeling a bit disoriented with all the sites, mods, game editions, load orders, sub-components and so on.

One thing at a time.
Now that I have BG2 EE, do I need UI mods?
Or do I just need to work on the in-game graphic settings?

I heard about a mod that add turn trackers for active effects. What's its name?

P.S.:
did anyone try Imoen 4 Ever?

Just read the readmes as you install. It's a fun read, actually.

Perhaps outdated, but short:

No UI needed. You need scs, with everything installed, and Tweaks. Not sure which ones, others are probably less forgetful, but tweaks provide a great deal of customization of gameplay, ease of use and game rules. As I said, reading the readmes is fun just because of the cool ideas people came up with.

Yes, indeed, I am reading them.
And becoming aware of how close to the skyrim mod scene this has become...

Sure it can be fun in some ways but it'll be long too.
I'm building a virtual mod order (complete with picks for the sub-components) to follow once it's finished.
Indeed doubts upon doubts are starting to rise.
For instance, if I use Imoen 4 Ever, may I still change her to a Swashbuckler/Mage using Refinements?

P.S.: thanks for the video link!
