Meh. When I was young, I played Dungeon Keeper at a 640 480 resolution and I was fucking happy with that. You young bucks and your high tech toys and your toyota volkswagen tilesets.

edit: Also, this is in the wrong forum.

Dwarf Fortress is an RPG in which you play the role of a cruel dictator ruling over a population of alcoholics and yuppies.

When I was young I had a tv screen and two paddles. And there was a little white blob which went across the screen until it hit a white bat on either extremity. I don't think resolution existed as a concept at that time. But then I'm an old fart with a huge dick.

Obviously, but the game is turnbased so you can take your time. You don't need to see the whole map. There won't be any moments when you suddenly decide to scroll down and you see like "oh shit, those elephants are gonna tank rush me! where the fuck are my guys?! all the fucking way up there?!! shit!! gotta scroll up!! gotta scroll down!! why is there not a fullscreen mod for this fucking game! hurry, my dwarves! hurry, before the elephants blow up the whole alphabet!"

Dude, I know right? Why the fuck do they even need more than a pixel? You can pause it and scroll! Fucking lazy graphix fagix.

I did too, dickwad.

When I was young, I played games on floppy disks and one time, when I was playing Leisure Suit Larry, I couldn't find one of the floppies so I couldn't continue the game *arse measuring*

Dwarf Fortress is similar to Sim City but you don't get to track each individual in Sim City.

An interesting addition to Dwarf Fortress would be natural catastrophes like volcano erupting, earthquakes, insect plagues, other kind of plagues, invasions and so on.

Without some random events the game is a bit boring. This is way i create my own random events. Last time i played i was getting bored and flooded the dungeon with lava. Only a few of them were quick enough to flee outside.

Actually the Dungeon Keeper series would be a more accurate comparison. The complexity in those games aren't near the level of Dwarf Fortress but they were built on the same basic concept: dig out rooms, attract minions and keep them happy, defend from invaders with traps and such.

Dwarf Fortress is going to be much more than that. At some point (hopefully soon) you will be able to raise armies and march them across the map. You can embark on a holy quest to purge the world of that wretched infestation known as "the Elves".

That is until they rain a thousand arrows of death upon your hapless army, cutting them down to the last man, feasting on their flesh, and warming their children in blankets of dwarf leather.

When I was young, I played games on cassettes with tape and 40 Kb was loading in memory for 3 minutes and there always was a chance that it will give you an error and you will have to rewind the cassette and look for the start of file to try and load it again.
:big arse:

When I was young I played with action figures and would make whole scenarios and do different voices with the different characters.

There's a new bugfix version of DF out now. Also, thanks a lot for a nice tileset Mayday. Let's just hope that Toady has it in the near future pipeline to split the ASCII and map tiles to different files since the little perfectionist in me just hate letters that doesn't look like letters. (Yes, I know about the "light" version but there still are some uncommon letters that look like levers and stuff.)

Also, in relation to the OT discussion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FatHLHG2 ... re=related

Edit: Now with better sound and dutch subtitles!

Sorry, little mistake. I'm drunk and tired, so I can't think properly.
DF is a great game, but after recent uptades it is too complex for me (vide water sytem).
