Pathologic's soundtrack is unique, pretty dark, and kind of totally out there. Just like the game, more or less. The Main Theme, the song that plays in the infected houses, and this trailer's song that's also used a couple of times through the game are good examples of it.

Soul Reaver also has some pretty cool songs, like the main theme and the cathedral's battle music.

Japanese bullet hell games also have some pretty good songs if you are into the kind of music action games tend to have. Esp.Ra.De's boss theme, Hellsinker's Apostles of Seed theme, Vampire Rex's stage 7 theme, Mushihimesama Futari's true last boss theme, Alternative Sphere's stage 3 theme, Guwange's boss theme, Death Smiles' boss theme, and this song from Cloudphobia being my current favorites. That's one genre with some really awesome music all around if you want to get your blood pumping for some awesome and epic fights, yay.

I'll post more things i like if i find them. It seems my tastes in game music tend to be somewhat obscure and i can't find what i'm looking for right now. -_-U

Most everyone posting in this thread has been receptive; therefore, majority rule dictates you are, in fact, the faggot.

To put that in more simplistic terms:

Might as well bite. Of games that haven't been yet been mentioned, Divine Divinity, Arcanum, Grim Fandango (mostly towards the beginning of the game, with the Mexican-y pieces in El Marrow and the big band/jazz of the first two cities), and Outlaws (easily as good a western soundtrack as any classic film) come to mind. Torment's music is pretty good, but with repeated listening the formulaic nature begins to wear on me. Fallout's is atmospheric, but not very good standalone music IMO. Icewind Dale = a bit cheesy/pulpy and overwrought, but pleasing to listen to nonetheless. Monkey Island is pretty good but no single piece really stands out.

Since they're the games above that less people here are likely to have played:

Aw, man. Now I'm feeling all nostalgic for old Lucasart games. :(

Not as much good stuff on consoles, in my experience - there's a lot more "gamey" music, which I tend not to like as much as a good background piece - but maybe Vagrant Story and Okami. There's some good stuff in the FFs, but it's buried in mediocrity. I think Xenogears had a few good pieces. Shadows of the Colossus can be pretty epic in-game at the right moments, but doesn't sound nearly as good on its own.

Vagrant Story:

Okami (these have a strong Japanese feel to them - classic flutes and harps stuff, not J-pop - so don't click if you're Emotional Vampire. Songs marked with a * incorporate a theme played four times - twice in a more basic form, twice with slight enhancements):

Some of my favs, aside from the awesome OST OP posted, Fallout, Deus Ex, Syndicate Wars and PS:T:

Diablo 1, especially Tristram music.
Blood, which has superb dark ambient tunes.
Dune, with it's meditative, almost ritualistic vibe.
Heroes of Might and Magic 2. Definitely the most epic soundtrack of all the titles in the series.
Motherfuckin' DOOOOM! (special mention goes to "The Sky May Be" WAD, it has it's own music.)
The ominous, ambient music of Zork: Nemesis is brilliant as well.
Blade Runner featured music composed by Vangelis, just like the movie, it's soundtrack thus became teh awsumz by default.

There's more but i'm too lazy to dig for links.

Oh yeah, definitely. And I was thinking of that exact example when I clicked on your link. Between that, the artistic design of the temple, and that creepy-ass voice you heard while exploring, that temple had some great atmosphere.

(It's amazing how differently the three Zork graphic adventures turned out in terms of atmosphere. Return to Zork was nothing like Nemesis, which in turn was nothing like Grand Inquisitor.)
