The tech support page for Blades of Avernum has updated with a new patch. The patch fixes problems with the riposte and a few scenario glitches/niggles. The Windows version of the patch weighs in at 3.3MB and does work with the demo and full versions of the game.

So, either get the patch, or be extra nice to Lord Maynard. Your choice.
