  • Grub not being able to see the NVMe partition *before boot* was definitely the key. I don't think "Fast Boot" is an "industry standard" feature, but is present in many motherboard BIOSes. It makes sense that you'd have to disable that in order for partitions to be recognizable under all circumstances.

    Honestly I've never encountered a situation where the NVRAM's entries for the UEFI boot info per volume has ever gotten erased or corrupted. I believe you can have hundreds of entries, each keyed to the individual drive's ID's, and I think you can even move them around on the various SATA or M.2 slots without it "forgetting" them.

    Well, it's only my supposition that the windows installer erased them (and added a new entry for the newly installed windows 10), I really have no other explanation, for how they could vanish simply by themselves. But it may well be that my motherboard's firmware is just bugged.
