I've never understood paid crossover DLC. Yes, I'm such a fan of this game, I want to pay to look like I'm a character from that game while I'm playing yours instead of just playing that game. Retarded.

You just spelled out their thought process right there. Your average whale doesn't care about the sensibility of their purchase, they just care about the surface-level shit and/or bragging rights.

Hey I think I read about this happening. Like 406 BC, right? AC teaches kids about history. It's awesome.

As if any more arguments were needed to avoid this dick-line...

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Steam page confirms Denuvo DRM and account linking

[Emphasis added]

Far Cry 6, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, AC Mirage, and other Ubisoft games all use Denuvo Anti-Tamper, and require players to connect their Steam accounts to Ubisoft Connect – and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be no different. According to the new listing for the stealth RPG that has just appeared on Valve’s store, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will also require players using Steam to link their account to Ubisoft Connect. The game is also protected by Denuvo, a third-party DRM (digital rights management) solution that is used by a variety of triple-A developers today.

...

In the past, players have suggested that Denuvo might affect the technical performance of PC games. The company has disputed these claims – in a recent interview, product manager Andreas Ullmann said that Denuvo “simply works.” Games that require players to link their Steam accounts with other platforms have also been controversial. Earlier this year, Helldivers 2, was review bombed after publisher PlayStation mandated that Steam players connect their accounts to the PlayStation Network. PlayStation later retracted the account linking requirement for Helldivers 2, though it is still present in some of the publisher’s other games, such as Ghost of Tsushima.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ requirements are consistent with other Ubisoft games including Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Far Cry 6. Skull and Bones requires that players link to Ubisoft Connect, but does not use Denuvo. The Division 2, on the other hand, does not require account linking, but uses another third-party DRM solution called VM Protect.

It was recently rumored that Assassin’s Creed Shadows would also include a battle pass, but Ubisoft confirmed that this was not true. The short early-access period for the stealth game was dropped after the launch date was delayed by three months.
