I've never understood paid crossover DLC. Yes, I'm such a fan of this game, I want to pay to look like I'm a character from that game while I'm playing yours instead of just playing that game. Retarded.
You just spelled out their thought process right there. Your average whale doesn't care about the sensibility of their purchase, they just care about the surface-level shit and/or bragging rights.I'm such a fan of this game, I want to pay to look like I'm a character from that game while I'm playing yours [...]

Because of the size of the userbase maybe? No sense shooting yourself in the foot when it didn't work out the last time they tried to decouple from steam. Why even bother releasing it on Steam? People wanna buy on Steam exactly to avoid all other 3rd party bloatware.
One of the things that I’ve noticed since the pandemic is that we have a lot of juniors in our teams. Probably half the team that’s building Assassin’s Creed is building a game for the first time.
Unfortunately, the sour news doesn’t stop there. According to Marc-Alexis Côté, the game’s internal evaluation isn’t promising, either. The team behind Shadows considers this entry to be the weakest in the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise, which speaks volumes about Ubisoft’s development overall.
Lmao

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article originally used a report from The Outer Haven that claimed the company considers Shadows “the weakest entry in the series”. That has been removed due to no evidence of that being said or reported. We apologize for the oversight and will ensure it does not happen again
I'd imagine the same is true of other meatgrinders like Rockstar. One of the things that I’ve noticed since the pandemic is that we have a lot of juniors in our teams. Probably half the team that’s building Assassin’s Creed is building a game for the first time.
EXCLUSIVE – Ubisoft’s XDefiant Will be Shutting Down in June 2025
Several sources have revealed that Ubisoft will be shutting down XDefiant in June 2025.
The news was mentioned in an internal all-hands meeting today. The decision was made due to poor player numbers and a lack of player spending, according to sources familiar with the decision to sunset the game.
It’s understood that layoffs will impact a significant number of employees at the San Francisco studio and supporting studios, with some staff already receiving severance information. Another wave of layoffs will happen in February, with Ubisoft San Francisco and Osaka closing its doors. Around 170-180 people are understood to be losing their jobs.
Season 3 will be the last entire season of XDefiant, with a skeleton crew maintaining the title until June 2025. According to those familiar with the situation, Ubisoft will be updating XDefiant players on refunds for cosmetic items and other purchases at a later date.
XDefiant started its uphill battle soon after the release of Season 1, with a lack of player spending having the team scrabbling to cut costs.
In August 2024, Insider Gaming reported that XDefiant was on borrowed time despite initially having strong player numbers. Frustrations within the studio were always aimed at its leadership, who refused to take responsibility for the project’s shortcomings, which could have been avoided with a better studio culture, said the people.

It's a good start. The story continues ...Ubisoft Closes Two Studios And Will Reportedly Lay Off Hundreds Of Employees
[Emphasis added]
It's been a tough year for the games industry with multiple studio closures and layoffs, and now as we enter December, Ubisoft continues the trend.
As highlighted by Game File reporter Stephen Totilo, Ubisoft is shutting down its San Francisco studio and Osaka, Japan office. It will also be "ramping down" its team located in Sydney, Australia. The total employee cuts are expected to be around "277" people.
As part of this, Ubisoft is also ending services for its free-to-play shooter XDefiant, which will wrap up next year on 3rd June 2025. This particular game launched earlier this year in May and half of its team is reportedly moving on to "other projects".
Ubisoft has released titles like Skull & Bones, Star Wars Outlaws and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown in 2024. Unfortunately, many of these games have fallen short of certain targets.
