Every popular game is good. That's why they're popular. Duh!
Exactly like how it works with Music, Movies and TV Shows!
That's why when I want to play a new game or see a new movie I always check to see what everyone else is playing and watching. That way I always get the best experience.

You should just play whatever is recommended by IGN at the time. It's a popular site, and therefore it's always correct about what games are good.

I'll do you one even better. You should consult the Codex hivemind instead. Not only will you discover the most monocled games, but you'll also earn much Brofists from your peers. That's the best game to play.

Skyrim was popular because it was a good game. It was huge, tuned to normies with regards to difficulty, and fun to explore for people who didn't play those types of games. It also helped that it was released at the end of a very stable console generation with a huge install base, plus good marketing, plus a few years after Fallout 3. It had a lot going for it.

It was not and is not a great RPG. But the idea that Game of Thrones had anything to do with its success is kind of dumb.
Skyrim was not good. Normies just didn't know better. If mediocrity is all you tasted in your life, then another mediocre product sounds like a good deal.

The reason why Skyrim sold so well is simply marketing. You can see it on vast amount of other examples where highly marketed games ALWAYS sell.

Think of Twitcher. Except in Poland, which is obvious, it didn't sell well, it had no marketing.

Twitcher 3, on the other hand, had a lot of marketing and sold very well. It's as popular as Skyrim, probably.

It's the same with media in general. If something is marketed everywhere, it just sells.

Exceptions are comparatively few.

Moreover, there are people who got into Skyrim because of marketing, then tried Oblivion or Morrowind and found them better. Many won't even try though, because a lot of people often assume old means worse, but some do not and give them a try to enjoy them even more than the newer game they got first.

True.

Oblivion is orders of magnitude better than Skyrim, and I fucking hate Oblivion.

Alright I watched some of this. Wasn't impressed. He's another Todd bootlicker. Claims that players don't understand what makes Beth games special and thus their criticisms aren't relevant.

Said stuff like 'RDR2 has better graphics but you can't put a bucket on someone's head in RDR2'.

Idiot.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Todd has surrounded himself with yes-men, because he can't take real criticism of his work, similar to George Lucas. And like George Lucas, he will eventually fall out of favour with the public because of this (some would argue Starfield is already the beginning of the end for them, but we will see)

Actually to be entirely fair to the interviewee he did raise that specific point, it was one of the few things he said that I agreed with

Starfield alone is all the evidence you need to prove what you just said though. Like there is no clearer evidence than that, it's Todd's baby and it's a giant pile of shit. Man's completely lost his edge.

He clearly did not want to upset anyone, from the most normie of gamers to the most inveterate Todd cultist.
Still, Todd does appear to be a genuinely "nice" guy as opposed to some of the narcissistic and insufferable pricks in the industry. I never agreed with many of his design choices, most notably his streamlining and perhaps even arbitrary removal of features in favor of overly simplistic ones, but he does possess managerial and leadership skills.

Oblivion is easily the worst Bethesda game ever made and its not even close. People who deny this truth are delusional.

Oblivion was the most disappointing Bethesda game, but every game released by Beth after it was even worse.

They're all worse than each other. I ran the numbers twice.
