The Beamdog folks were at GDC this week to promote their Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear expansion, which is less than two weeks away from release. It doesn't seem to have gotten much press, but they did allow GameSpot to post a video of the game's intro cutscene. I'd say it's better done than the BG:EE opening, with narrator Kevin Michael Richardson reprising his role. After the introduction, there are a few snippets of gameplay, including one scene that features a mysterious "Hooded Man" who sounds suspiciously like David Warner, and another scene that shows a massive battle. Unfortunately, the dramatic effect of these scenes is rather diminished by the tendency of whoever was playing the game to skip through the voiced dialogue before it finishes.

GameSpot also have an additional Siege of Dragonspear video that demonstrates the effects of switching difficulty levels, but that's nothing we haven't seen before.

I really liked the intro! That is how you do a homage to the IE games! Ok, if the Codex consensus ends up being that it's gud, I intend to buy this after release.

Is that battle for real? I see they went back to the roots and finally realized the long-forgotten plans of making BG a shitty RTS.

*runs past first battle and loses party formation*
*clicks through dialogue without reading*
*no pre-buffing, runs character directly into meatgrinder, losing him immediately and forcing a reload*

Hope development is handled with more skill than understanding of how these games are supposed to be played.
Haven't played it, so redacting that one. Let's just say I hope they have a better understanding of how to make one of these than how to play it.

Nostalgia bait trailer, as it should be. I'm not nostalgic for Baldur's gate, though, so I'm going to wait and see if this game can stand on its own before I'll consider getting it.

I don't get it. The villain's "background and goals are shrouded in mystahry", yet a massive army follows and reveres her.

For what reason, exactly? :philosoraptor:

i wonder (seriously)

...what aren't these games turn-based? i watched the video and the weird system of attack and wait animations running in loop reminded me of those old games that were turn-based that used to come out on DOS like wing commander and ultima

why are they using this type of what i call "apple mobile phone touch-screen controls" way of handling combat in all these new games coming??

i don't know. sorryt for long post guys. it just seemed to me like the video footage would've lookd better if it was in turns instead of in the new mobile phone style where it plays itself.

Usually with premises like these the mysterious villain has some story he's telling his followers ("I'll lead you to glory and give you land and wealth!") but everybody on the other side realizes it's just a cover story for something that is "shrouded in mystery".

aweigh, I have to say this say this. That thing you do where you pretend to be a drunk/stoned weirdo while secretly making some incisive and cogent point? We get it, dude. We get it.

The "gather your party" sound and totally-not-Irenicus being so prominent in the trailer felt like heavy pandering. Extremely heavy pandering.

And why the characters all seem to have a black stroke around them? Did they add that in the Enhanced Editions?
