Yes, you read that correctly. Bioware has actually done something outside the norm and injected a new species into the Star Wars universe, which they call the Rakata species, which are supposed to be extinct at the time KOTOR takes place.

According to the write-up at AVault: The Rakata were a widespread civilization that disappeared ten thousand years before the emergence of the Republic and left behind very little information about their culture. Archaeologists have pieced together what little evidence remains.

To sum it up, you're probably going to find ounces upon gallons of ph4t l3wt in the Rakata ruins. Read the whole thing here if you're interested. There's even some pretty pictures of live members of the supposedly long dead Rakata. Chances are you're going to have to fight some of them.

Looks like a Mon Calamari, the only Star Wars race that makes me think about lunch.

What's the point of introducing a race that has supposedly been extint for 30k years? Even if you stumble across one of their old bases, why should there be anything left intact? Looks like a bullshit move by Bioware so that they can do the whole "ancient temple full with artifacts" cliché.

As far as creativity, ever notice that the species is basically a rip-off, just like with 99% of Bioware's recycled shit?

Hell, how about the whole IDEA of a wide spread, advanced race just all croaking? Not only is that one of sci-fi's biggest cliches, it's also one of the silliest. If the race is that widespread, there's really no single event that can actually wipe out every single member of a species that's spread over several systems.

You know, if there's anything valuable I've received from being affilated with the RPG Codex, it's the fact that reading most of the posts here increases my intecllectual capacity. I'd probably have never thought about what Saint Proverbius just said on my own. I'm just not very creative in that sense.

I bet there going to have some type of Party member that is the last of their race, who gets misty eyed when they enter the race's lost temple. Standerd procedure.

Oh, fuck! Not that brand of crappy melodrama and angst again.

Of course, since the race is supposed to have died off, if there is a member, the race can live for a reallyreally long time or there was some form of cryogenics or...frozen in carbonite.

"Sorry buddy. Your race is fucked. Join us in our fucked up quest! Take a spot between Angsty Love Interest #1 and Bitchy Love Interest #2"

"Sure!" (After all, after that time, they will automatically know each others' languages!)

Oh yes, it's precisely that brand of melodrama yet again, which no Bioware RPG can do without. With the exception of Baldur's Gate, of course: their only game in which the romance concerned Sarevok's relationship with Tomoko, and had nothing to do with you. That's what romances in RPGs should be like: something to add to the setting, rather than to take up time from the player's own adventure.

What's sad about it is that in Throne of Bhaal, they neve follow up on the Sarevok-Tomoko thing. I.e. he never talks about her even though he supposedly loved her in the first episode. That's typical Bioware continuity for ya! It's no wonder Lucas picked them to write KOTOR.

Any takers? It's pretty obvious they are going to have a living representative of the race in game. Who knows? Maybe the princess-type has a little bit of Rakata in her blood, and that's what makes her so good at healing magic. It's also the reason Emperor Shinra is after her. Of course the temples are also going to be significant, because they hold the secret to some ultimate destructive power, which is likely to be a ring world capable of destroying all life within a few thousand light years.

If any writers from Bioware are reading this thread they thoughts that are probably on their minds will be "Damn it. I just wrote that last Tuesday! How'd they figure out the storyline?"

Well, you can bet that race will pop up. However, the first thing I thought of when I read that they'd have the extinct race thing was the plot to NWN where the extinct race came back and tried to take over the universe. After all, NWN was their best story ever, so just redo it! ;)

Hehe, too bad the others are dead, now we can't see the party member whining before slaying his brothers... "You're an evil, evil, man. I don't think I like you much!" *zap* *hack* *slash* *bang*

Who knows, you might just get the chance to see that! They could set it up in sequenced/scripted movie-style flaskback fashion. Family Guy ripoffs.

Didn't they do the same thing in NWN with those evil lizard beasts who suposably eons ago where the dominant race in Faerun?

Or did WotC already invent them? (I'm a D&D newbie)

Why should we? It's not like any went into either of the prequels.
