So, for those looking for a Pokemon type game on the cheap, Entodrive is out in a very Early Access release. The current asking price is $2.99US, but is considered an Alpha at the moment. Not all the areas are currently fleshed out, not everything is in the game, some dialogue is missing and so on. Anyway, here's a trailer and some of what is in:

Alpha Build #0.05
Gameplay Currently Implemented :
  • Build state is in alpha with a vertical slice that showcases the design pillars.
  • 2 towns, a cave, and two routes to explore.
  • Travel through Javapool, Crystal Cave, Crystal Town, Crystal Cove, Lua Road, and Python Port.
  • Choose your starting Entodrive.
  • Hacking Entodrive.
  • Entodrive Upgrades.
  • Turn based combat.
  • Moves with different abilities.
  • Battle other crews.
  • Encounter Entodrive in strange locations.
  • Character model choice selection.
  • Fast Forward binded to a button with varying speeds in the options menu.
  • Debug commands. (cheats)

You know, at some point, these games need to standardize having a character system for the player's character in addition to the critters.

I dunno about this. Pokemon needs a reboot, but part of the charm was the distinctive character / monster designs. These look bland and it looks like a carbon copy of the gameplay from the original. What makes this special; why play it over the old Pokemon GBC games? It's a list of features but those don't translate into a list of fun for me. Maybe I just don't get it.

Oh, boy. This is...not an appealing looking game. They set up the camera angle so the sprites match up with the ground, but because of that, everything else looks weird. But because they made all their sprites look very Pokemon-y, bordering on copyright infringement, they look out of place with the environment. Its like someone found a way to scientifically make the ugliest game possible.

On the one hand, I am glad that the front page isn't just spam anymore, posting news about some Diablo 3 patch or news about a generic Fallout 76 interview. Because, what the fuck. On the other hand, of all the current indie RPGs on the market... Really? Is this the you guys have chosen to post about? Several of the characters are literally slightly modified colored versions of Pokemon sprites, for heaven's sake!

They managed to release a worse version of a game created for the Gameboy 23 years ago, fan-fucking-tastic.

Yup. I actually like the 2.5D graphics. Now, this game, which is an alpha at this point, isn't the greatest example of such, but I do like the sprite-in-a-3D-world look. Perhaps it's the fact I played Doom 2 a little too much and it's nostalgia, but it's a very interesting style.

What gets me about a lot of the Pokemon clones is that they clone it too directly. Look at this one for example. I guess part of the appeal is the "cute" monsters, but the problem is that you're cloning something with nearly 900 monsters at this point so using the cute art styling is only going to mean that there will be some asset overlap. If they went with a different style, they wouldn't have that, "Yeah, that's a Charmander." problem that a lot of the Pokemon clones seem to have.

Also, it's just a little too odd in this modern age to have a bunch of kids running around on their own in a world that also has fairly dangerous monsters and they actively seek out those monsters. It's fine in Pokemon, because it's been around for so long and is already established as that being the way of that world. However, given pretty much all the clones continue to stick with that is just odd.

Are you really trying to argue that Pokemon fans are autistic and lack originality? Yes, we know - the sky is blue.

I have a better query - how soon until the porn mods arrive? I give it six months.

And that's fair enough, it's super ok to like the 2.5D perspective and, personally, I'm also a huge fan of Doom 2. I must have literally spent hundreds of hours on Sonic Robo Blast 2 (which uses the same engine), and had a lot of fun recently playing Castlevania: Simon's Destiny (also on the Doom engine). But this is this, and that is that. I mean, the game literally does a rip of Pokémon sprites, it's not a matter of inspiration here, but you're literally picking up this game for just a single gimmick - it's like posting a random RPG Maker game "because it has turn-based combat", wouldn't you agree?

Subverse is basically a porn game and I won't waste my time with it, but it just came out in Early Access and was not on on the home page - and several of the users of the site will no doubt play it. (Hey, it's their time, everyone uses it the way they want to.) It certainly deserved a citation more than this game. And if it's about old-school looking games, how about Battle for Esturia? I haven't played it, but at least it looks like a game with original graphics.

Or if the idea is to bring something to Pokémon fans (who should be buying Pokémon, but anyway), there's TemTem. Or even better:

Unless I miss my mark, this IS a RPG Maker game. I'm using the same plugin for the 2.5d effect (which also allows for isometric). I would have to actually buy the game to confirm tho.
