Animmal's unique early Bronze Age RPG The Way of Wrath was successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter back in February. The campaign even managed to hit a couple of stretch goals, including one for an optional real-time-with-pause mode. Although it's hard to tell due to the developers' puzzling choice to make most of their post-funding Kickstarter updates private, it seems that an early access build was released to backers in July and that development is progressing well. Yesterday Animmal announced that they'd managed to score a publishing deal with Hooded Horse, the Dallas-based indie publisher behind strategy titles such as Terra Invicta and Old World. Here's the obligatory new trailer and an excerpt from the announcement:

We have some exciting news for you!

We've teamed up with the Hooded Horse, this amazing team will be publishing and marketing The Way of Wrath RPG. We're very excited about this partnership as the Hooded Horse has a very unique and developer-friendly approach, they are hardcore RPG & Strategy gamers at heart and we instantly clicked with the team. Hooded Horse will be marketing our game and publishing the game on different stores and platforms. While we'll focus even more on the game development.

We have won in a local start-up funding event!

We participated in a start-up competition and we were among the finalists! Our team will receive additional funding to improve the game which will result in some cool upgrades to game animations and add additional depth to exploration and combat.

What this all means for the game.

Some really exciting stuff! The game will become much better with the new resources we have. We'll be getting an animation motion capture system, a special suit that can record real-life movement and translate it into digital animation we can use in the game. The animations, especially the shaman rituals will be getting a huge upgrade, we'll also be able to include more cinematic scenes. There will also be a lot more NPC animations and activities, so the world will be brought to life.

With more development time freed now that we have a publishing partner, we'll be improving combat and exploration depth with extended navigation options and more of the world interactivity. We're very happy to have a chance to realize our game in more detail.

To make use of all these new possibilities of improving the game, we'll need to expand the development time and this will affect the release date. We cannot say the exact new release date right now, we'll need some time with the new tools and gameplay prototypes to lock down the specifics. But we should have more information and details in the next update.

But as always we'll be sharing the latest game updates with you and you'll be able to play the game early through the exclusive backer beta.

As mentioned in the update, The Way of Wrath has been delayed past its rather optimistic original release date of early 2022, although according to its Steam page it's still scheduled to launch sometime next year. Animmal's earlier plans to release a public Early Access build have also been called off.

Oh look, another hard pass abomination posted by the prestigious news shit-poster. Unfortunately this does not have hard mechadicks... Some gypsies here will be very disappointed.

!BREAKING NEWS!

The tyrannical path of HARD PASS continues as Darkozric has declared a SECOND HARD PASS on the title "Way of Wrath." After his last terrorist attack on innocent indie development project Mechajammer left Whalenought Studios in shambles, both financially, emotionally and physically, it looks like Darkozric has set his sights on Hooded Horse.

ABOVE: City in chaos.

What we have here is the situation at hand. As you can see this is very uncomfortable, very disturbing, and tough to watch. We initially thought these were random HARD PASSES of passion but it seems there is a greater goal in mind here. Darkozric has singled out local robot and occasional segway, Infinitron, as inspiration for carrying out these destructive acts. As of now Infinitron does not wish to comment further but an emissary from Darkozric's camp has said, "the infidels will submit to HARD PASS justice until a Caliphate is elected and peace for Allah is restored."

The situation at a glance:

Thanks! We very much appreciate the interest and post! :)

Nothing unique about it, it looks completely undistinctive and unremarkable

The player has 10 days to prepare their tribe for an incoming attack. So it is open world, but each day is filled with strategic decisions about how to spend your efforts--do you strike at enemy camps, recruit allies, build up the base, etc. All culminating in a giant siege battle.

The Early Bronze Age setting and focus on shamanism rather than traditional D&D/Tolkien type magic also drew us in.

Our publishing goal at Hooded Horse is to find indie titles that offer something unique and innovative in their genre--and I do think The Way of Wrath very much qualifies as that.

Mr. Hooded Horse I thank you for joining us here today on behalf of the RPG Codex and taking the time to sit down with me for this interview. I know these must be difficult times for you, your team and your family and friends. Can you just tell us... just kind of walk us through it all. What went through your mind when Darkozric declared a... well there's no way to sugarcoat it, is there? When he declared a HARD PASS on your title, The Way of Wrath? Was there... shock? Was there anxiety? What was it all like?

Haha, well I know this is a joke, but honestly--that's the great thing about being an indie publisher. We don't have to look for a game that a majority would like, instead the only thing needed is that there is something there for some group of players to love--and that's enough to cover costs and allow both publisher and developer to enjoy a good return and keep putting out these games (our other games, Terra Invicta, Falling Frontier, Alliance of the Sacred Suns, and Old World are likewise all games that offer something innovative in their genre rather than looking like something that came out of some marketing department's focus group testing).

And there you have it, folks. This Hooded Horse is not ready to be made into glue yet. Perhaps we can all learn something from this. We can all become better, more accepting individuals.

smacks lips and turns to new camera angle

That wraps up this intriguing saga but stay tuned for there is more exciting news on the way such as the 370th birthday celebration of Crispy, Whatever Happened To Zep Zepo and that disease which turns everybody's skin inside out.

I've seen some bad pizza faces in my day. I used to ride the bus in HS and a few pizza-faces even had the cheesy zits dripping. Pretty gross.

What's up with the kiddie aesthetics in these new games? I was vaguely interested in the game when it was announced a few months back, but now I'm really unsure. Also, Gothic 1 almost looks better than this.

To appeal to wider audiences. People with prestigious taste tend to be older and less likely to have time trying out new games on average.

Kids are stupid, spend tons of money and have no taste. Btw, this is why media over the last xx years have been trending in steep decline.

Our target market for this sort of game is the older generation actually--it's heavily inspired by games like Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins, and Morrowind. Quests don't hold your hand, you have to explore, you have to make actual tradeoffs in quest choices--and combat can and will kill you.

I can't speak to other games, but the artistic choices in The Way of Wrath come down to the creative taste of the art director mixed with certain economic realities. On that, while we all love the classic CRPG art style, achieving that is very expensive. Titles like Pillars of Eternity had budgets in the many millions of dollars to achieve their art. There is a ton of content in The Way of Wrath, and that means lots of character models, items, structures in states of building, fortifications, environment, etc. Of course, not everyone will love the art direction, but we do hope the content and gameplay will draw some of those people in.

And honestly, while I'd consider myself more a fan of the older CRPG look, when I played The Way of Wrath I felt its artistic choices worked very well in the context. That's something hard to capture in screenshots, but hopefully it will show through when players try it out.

I was watching a PBS All Creatures Great & Small intro and the graphical style looked sort of similar.

TBH, if a game plays well enough I don't care what art style is used. It is frosting on the cake imho.
