There's a new spanking preview of Pirates of the Caribbean over at PC.IGN, featuring two pages chock full of nutty goodness. Here's a bit on NPC skills:

You can interact with your ship and make instant changes even when you're on land. If you have an officer who's very loyal and skilled, but is a bit of a pansy when it comes to a swordfight, you can instantly assign him to be a "passenger" on your ship rather than an active officer. This way you get all of the benefits of his skills without having to worry about watching his back in a fight. This is only a problem until you can equip your officers with some better weapons so they can take care of themselves. When you visit a town's shipyard you can repair, sell or buy ships and outfit any ship you own with new cannons and the changes are instant. When you buy goods for transporting like oil, cinnamon or linen, the cargo is instantly loaded on your ship the second you pay for it.

That's kind of odd that you can make use of passengers' skills, but okay!

- Inspired by the feature film coming July 9th

What a bloody lie!

It was inspired by Sea Dogs 1.

BTW, does anyone know if you can play the chick still. Also, it would be kind of nice if you actually looked like pirate, if you chose to play that way. Or a snobby english prick if you choose to be blaze.

We don't know if it will be another Civ3 yet..

I loved Civ3, probably the best empire building game ever. And considering the holes it fixed, and the cohesion it implemented, god I hope so.

EDIT: Except for all the bugs.

Heh, and I liked Civ2, but it wasn't as good as Civ... Because the first one was almost perfect by my standards then, so I had to be disappointed by its sequel. It actually had very few improvements over Civ, but most important was that I hated the isometric view. Always got confused during movement and I couldn't tell which unit is which by its appearance, unlike in CIv.
I also loved Alpha Centauri. I wasn't impressed by Civ3 too much because the only new thing was cultural dominance, I think.

If Civ3 had been Civ2 with some of the auto-road/auto-farm options, and a non-cheating AI.. I would have liked it more.

Any game that has Bantu Bowmen shooting down my Criuse Missles is crap, let alone the impossibility of defeating the AI.
EU is so much better its funny.

I have never seen bantu bowman shoot down a cruise missle. But I have seen kuwaity's.

I also have not played EU so maybe I should change my comment to the best empire building game I have played, which does not include EU.

Chicago. And damn anyone who is not the same.
EU has- get this- HISTORY!
A large part of the game is dedicated to historical accuracy.
That and the fact that you can play any nation in the world from 1419-1820.
My Byzantium streched from Bengal to the Bavarian border, from Australia to Seattle to Morrocco, and 90% of the empire was Orthodox.

I do think EU2 is a whole lot better than Civ3, but they're different breeds of strategy.

I would have really loved Civ3, but it had one glaring problem: Combat.

I'm sorry, under no circumstances should a roman centurion be able to (I don't care how randomly) destroy a 20th century tank.

Well that is so rare its not any funny. Its statistically possible, but not very likely. As a matter a fact it is about as likely in Civ3 as it is in real life. If I have tanks and then enemy has centurians, they I will mow over them like spring grown grass. Weak argument.

I have problems with combat myself, except my arguments have to do with not having enough tactical elements. I think the airfields and radars were a nice thing in that direction. I like the cruise missiles, but I did not like the nerfing of other artillary. I would like to have seen artillary more useful, and other things such as convoys in modern times to create medic stations after battlefield medicine. I also would have like to see better implementations of marines, and paratroopers, which for all intents and purposes are useless. Especially if you are invading a city with mechanical infantry.

Would happen every time if you got a bad seed roll before even moving.

The seed is normally carried, until the patch which allows you to reinitialize it. But you need three bad rolls, at least. For my armies four bad rolls. Lets break it down mathematically.

If you attack a Legionairre you attack something that essentially has a 3 attack and a 3 defense. A wimpy tank has a 16 attack and an 8 defense.

Tank attacks fortified Legionairre. 16 vs. 4.5 Meaning that you have a 80% success rate. Chances of rolling a 100 sided dice under 20 4 straight time are very unlikely. Chances are you will win every time. Yes maybe every once in awhile you will lose a tank, but it is a statistical anomaly.

Legionairreattacks a fortified wimpy tank. 3 vs 12 Meaning that for the tank has again an 80% chance of survival each turn. Again you need to roll the 100 sided dice under 20 four times to lose your tank, highly unlikely.

Not to mention smart tactics. In other words, veteran tanks and elite tanks have bigger bonuses. There are radars that help. Try to defend across rivers and in jungles. Attack from mountains. If you play smart, you can make it so that the chances of a legionairre winning any round would be less than 5% for every hitpoint. For my games a tank losing to a legionairre is a statistical impossibility.

triCritical, I don't care about the circumstance. Whether you're in a jungle, mountains or an ice cream parlor is totally irrelevant. A guy with a spear cannot destroy a fucking tank.
