Anyone who's been following <a href=http://www.vampirebloodlines.com/entrance.html>Vampire: Bloodlines</a>' community for a while, as well as visiting our forums lately is probably aware of the controversy surrounding the patches available for <a href=http://www.terra-arcanum.com/troikagames/>Troika Games</a>' final CRPG, with Wesp and Tessera being the main participants. It seems Tessera and Acrimonius have <a href=http://www.tessmage.com/forum/index.php/topic,298.msg2371.html#new>something to say</a> about it all:<blockquote>We did in fact use many of Wesp's scripts when we created the original version of our patch. Acrimonious is a trooper. He has worked his butt off on our True VTMB Patch, adding no less than 100 additional megabytes of bug fixes and restored content (...). This entire project has been a labor of love and it has also been a gift of sorts to the VTMB community. We would absolutely hate to see our good intentions being trashed by an angry post-adolescent, whose childish ego is preventing him from understanding why this patch needed to be made. At the same time, we don't wish to see any of Wesp's tantrums against our patch gain any traction within the VTMB community. That has left us with only one legitimate path to take in this matter:

Yep, he has decided to totally, utterly and completely go through every single Python script and configuration file, all over again, by himself. Acrimonious already knows what all of the bugs in VTMB are and where they come from. He is an expert programmer in his own right (as we have already seen) and he is going to totally re-patch this game himself. Re-compile it from scratch. Re-compile it without incorporating anyone else's pre-existing works. (...)

Summary:

(1) The current version of our patch will no longer be fully supported by us, due to the controversy surrounding it.

(2) The next version of the True VTMB Patch, which will be named 4.04AT, is currently being produced. Stay tuned for updated info about the progress of that patch.

(3) The next version of our patch WILL NOT WORK unless it is applied to a clean, fresh installation of VTMB. If you have been using ANY

previous patches or mods -- including our own patches -- then you will need to ERASE the entire game from your hard drive and do a complete re-installation of the game -- BEFORE you can properly apply the next version of the True VTMB Patch.

(4) Future patches produced by us WILL support everything from 4.04AT --> onwards. They will NOT support any patches or mods that were produced prior to upcoming version 4.04AT. This means that if and when we release an updated patch after 4.04AT, you will not need to do this re-installation deal all over again. You will be able to install any future patches directly on top of 4.04AT, without any problems.</blockquote>Hopefully, the whole mess won't stop an actual patch being developed by whoever decides to work on one. Well, they did in fact use _all_ of my scripts and I added comments with my name attached only because this is common to mark where and what you were doing.

In many other cases, the changes Wesp made were inappropriate and Acrimonious changed those entries back to what Troika wanted them to be.

Now I guess it's a matter of opinion what "inappropriate" is and judging from the state the game was released in and the way Troika handled their own patches (just look at all the changes they did to TOEE), how should anyone know what Troika had wanted had they have had more time to do their own patches?

We are right now in contact on the GameBanshee forums because I think he underestimates the work he will have to face when doing all from scratch, especially as some people probably would not believe him anyway because he could always just look at my files and comments and reproduce them. In fact it turned out that he wanted to include my patch readme with proper credits like agreed upon all along which would have prevented this whole conflict and it was Tessera who didn't honour his promise!

Anyway, I have nothing against Acrimonious or an alternative bug-fixes-only patch and I even renewed my offer to use my patch as a base as long as the "true" name is changed and the original readme with proper credits is included. Now let's see what happens...

Have you talked to, or thought about talking to, Acrimonious on the topic of dissolving his partnership with Tessera? I'm enthusiastic about the idea of a "bug-fix-only' patch (no offense, but I've found some of the changes in your patches to be dubious in reasoning), but it seems that Tessera brings little but drama into the project; causing a lot of wasted time and effort. Acrimonious doesn't really need special hosting on Tessera's website, and from what I understand, Tessera provides nothing that can't be replaced.

Both you and Acrimonious seem like reasonable people, and there seems to be no reason why you can't work together on his patch; besides Tessera's inferiority complex.

I have. I have even repeated my offer of basing his patch on mine on the condition that he includes the full readme and calls it something different e.g. basic or bug-fixes-only patch.

As I don't know if Acrimonious will take the offer or how long it would take him to redo all the fixes on his own, I'll ask you to just tell me which changes you didn't like in my patches. Maybe we could do something about it from that end or at least I could try and explain my reasonings if they appear dubious.

As you already played the game in it's original state you should replay it with 3.5 or the soon to be released 3.6 to witness all the small details you may have missed because they were buggy or completely hidden.

Anybody who even thinks it might be a good idea to add that to a mod should not pretend to be "patching" the game. Tessera might have weird interests, but she doesn't fuck the game up by adding them.

Tessera doesn't actually do anything beyond bitching. Its Acrimonious thats doing the work, and shut the fuck up mathboy we've already been over that patch of drama. We have no desire to repeat it because you arrived late for the first act.

I won't shut up because that means the_dagon will get the wrong patch, and possibly someone else who reads Wesp5's completely objective post.

And I read the whole other thread, but in it, nobody seemed to realize just how fucked up the changes Wesp5 made were instead of focusing on the fact that the True patch removes most (all?) of the fuck ups you were more interested in bashing Tessera for liking nude people.

Well, then please list all the fucked up changes and maybe I can explain my reasoning for them or I may even remove them altogether if you can convince me they are stupid. Just to start with the one you already mentioned:

It was always possible to make love to Jeanette. But do you really think it was better when you needed to _kill Therese to be able to do it_? What kind of view is that? Also besides all the stuff Jeanette tells you when you meet her or the fact that she even slept with Tung, the moment I choose to make it happen, with an high enough seduction feat, she says "Hurry up, I can only amuse myself for that long." That sentence fitted like a glove ;)...

Our goal was to fix the game and to free people from the monopoly that has been imposed upon them, for over two years, by Werner Spahl (Wesp) and his mods. We have achieved our goal, but unfortunately, we've also inadvertently incited a turf war with Wesp that no one wants to be bothered with. For the time being, I have weighed all of the pros and cons of this mess and I have decided that above all, the VTMB community comes first. That's why I am going to leave the 4.03AT patch as-is and continue to support it. Wesp wants us to yank our patch from sight, so that he can continue to posture himself as The One True God of VTMB. I will not allow that, sorry.

At the same time, I do not wish to be the focus of any future controversy with our patches, so the work on the next version is continuing. When it is released, it will no longer serve any sort of "dual purpose" function. Right now, the True VTMB Patch will not only patch in fixes to the game, but it also patches out any damages done by Wesp. Well, the next version(s) of our patch will no longer pay any attention to Wesp's mods. That means that when the time comes for everyone to move over to our next True VTMB Patch, we're all going to have to erase any previous installations of the game and completely re-install everything from scratch. That way, the entire game will begin all over again with a clean slate and the only files that will be altered are those original files that our next patch actually needs to fix. There will be no more consideration given to anyone who may have been using Wesp's mods. We're cutting all connections to that person's work and by doing so, he will no longer have any future excuses to sabotage our reputations with his whining.

I'd be just lame, but Tessera's tone in conjunction with the nude patches moves it to "WTF?" levels. I think if Wesp and Acrimonious worked together, maybe we could get 2 separate things: a "patch" with bugfixes and a "mod" with more subjective stuff like balance changes etc? I think it'd be the best solution.

On total whim I patched up and started playing Bloodlines again this weekend. I played through two years ago as a Malkavian. It's almost like playing another game, but only because I actually understand the dialog options. I'm having a good time with it.

Look, as a gamer, all I give a damn about is whether the patch fixes bugs without introducing new ones. I respect the folks who put their free time into this stuff, but in a nutshell, I just don't give a fuck. I don't care who wrote the original scripts. I don't care whether it's an act of hubris to call your patch the true patch. I don't care about all this inane internet drama. I've been playing White Wolf games for about ten years now and if there's anything that I've learned, it's this - the designers have personality disorders and so do a majority of the folks who are drawn to these games. Google "happy pretendy fun time games" and cut the shit, would you?
