Apparently the Japanese are still sensitive over that whole "We nuked their ass in World War 2 after trying to take over the world" thing, so Fallout 3 has had to have some major changes to accomodate them, according to wired:

Fallout 3 is coming to Japan on December 4, but with a few changes that aren't so surprising.

The biggest change involves the elimination of the "Power of the Atom" side-quest, about a nuclear bomb in the middle of a town, with players having the option to detonate the device or not. Also removed is Mr. Burke, an NPC who invites the player to detonate the town.

Another change relates to the name of a weapon. Although not mentioned in the announcement, I'm guessing it refers to the "Fat Man" mini-nuke launcher.

Lesser changes involve the renaming of creatures, as well as a reduction in the amount of blood and corpses found in the game.

In other news, PC Games hardware tell you how to tweak the ini file to make the graphics look better. They even have a few comparison shots in their gallery. As usual, the tweaked game has longer viewing distance and higher detail.

Also, the 7 foot, 11 inch Fallout 3 statue up for sale on Sam's Club has sold for $2,500 (I'm guessing that's USD).

UK? There are numerous mods that do it TOO, and I'm about to install one myself. Because amount of 'blood and corpses' is FUCKING RIDICULOUS, word 'goreporn' comes to mind.

It's nice that we now can have racial slurs in news titles. Very nice.

Also, as far as I understand, the decision to censor the game was made by Bethesda themselves.

Well, looks like you people out there are in luck, because ...see above about 'goreporn' a-la Manhunt... and "Power of the Atom" quest is pretty stupid, if you ask me.

since when did japan become UK?

Since when did you become a fucking liar?

The only game banned or changed for the UK was Manhunt 2.

Since when did Japan become Germany/Australia?

Seriously, wtf. They censor a game for a country where the sickest kinds of porn have been invented? Holy fucking shit.

Also if you blow up a car, instead of it exploding in a mushroom cloud, Godzilla stomps on anybody in range.

i wanted to say germany but didnt wanna piss off the powers that be.

I'm not offended if you say Germany has fucked up censorship. Because it has. It is one of the reasons why I have to take over the power in this country to bring it back to its former glory.

They could have at least put some tentacle rape monster in place of the Megaton Nuke/Mr.Burje, if they really want to please the Japs. Or is it going to be in an exclusive DLC?

Another change relates to the name of a weapon. Although not mentioned in the announcement, I'm guessing it refers to the "Fat Man" mini-nuke launcher.
Great, did they also remove all the little boys from all locations as well?

Seriously though I continue in failing to see, how could a sane person take offense at nuclear weapons in a friggen post-nuclear setting. It's like making any kind of WW2 game and changing nazis to, whatever, buddhist monks? Zombies? (And I am fairly sure it happened in some fps or another)

What is ironic, if thay also removed nukular cars, the Jap version of Fallout3 is actually the truest F. sequel.

Always that way. Either porn or violence is frowned upon. Since I tend to favor nekkid women and sex over violence, usually, I'm actually quite fine with the way those things are handled here.

I wonder how well it will sell in Japan. They're not big on most western games, I hear.

So, if you call an American a "yank", is that a racial slur? Or a person from the UK a "brit"? Or is it the fact that the Japanese are Asian that you consider a slang term for people from that country a racial slur, even though we're talking about a nationality as opposed to a race? Maybe you're just a dumbass.

I must admit that I don't quite understand why the Japanese would want the quest 'the power of the atom' to be removed from the game. You, as the player, have the option to detonate the bomb or not. The Japanese can just decide not to denotate the bomb.

I actually don't see what's all the fuzz is about the reduction in the blood and gore etc. in the game. I don't see Fallout 3's humour as bloody mess perk only - like Todd H. does apparently.

I like there being mods that removes the gore & blood...

This is a retarded move from bethesda, japs seem to have a fixation on blood and mass destruction.

I found this article to be complete bullshit. I mean come on, they're afraid to offend people who are used to This, this, this, and this? Heck, even Princess Mononoke had it's fair share of violence, and epic disaster, and that's a film intended for both young and adult...and Bethesda is afraid of one person that finds the nuking of a city unsuitable?

I'm sorry, but either japan has soften up, or the guys at Bethesda are really fucking stupid.

This definitely smells more of American-PC pre-emptive move (i.e. Bethesduh). Wouldn't want to offend anybody now...bad for business and all...

Y'know, I never understood the Jap porn censorship laws. They can't show the genitalia itself so smut peddlers have found innovative ways to skirt around the issue (finer pixellated mosaics, etc.). Hell, I've seen pr0n where the vag is pixeallated but the anus is in plain view. What's up wit dat Japs?

I think it is obvious why the Japanese are sensitive about any plots involving nuclear bombs.

I don't see the comparison with pornography.

/me guesses that the folks at Bethesda are *not* fans of Takashi Miike films like Audition (an excellent puzzle movie BTW, think Mulholland Drive). I saw that here in the US and I'd guess about 1/3 of the theater cleared out at the start of the torture scenes. Even I found it at least a little shocking since the guy being tortured was such a totally nice guy. How often does that happen in the land of the rising sun? Try never. Ever. And that was one of Miike's least violent, least shocking films. I had a Japanese girlfriend some years ago, just after that film was released, and I told her about the film and how shocking I thought it was. She watches it and then laughs at me for thinking it's shocking. She barely even thought it was violent. So, no, I don't think the Japanese are particularly sensitive about the issue of blood, gore, or ultra-violence. They are about as hardcore as it gets. They make us (Americans) look like the bunch of pansies that we are. And they practically invented porn with young girls. Maybe some of the old timers would be sensitive about "nukular" issues, but I don't think it would phase anyone under 50. If this cernsorship was done "voluntarily" by Bethimax they are even bigger idiots than I thought they were.

Again, this has nothing to do with tolerance violence, nudity or similar content. It is a political and historical issue. Similar to sensitivity of the portrayal of Japan/Japanese military crimes during WW2. DarkUnderlord got it right in his first post, I'm not sure why everyone started mentioning Japanese porn since then, it has nothing to do with the topic.
