GearHead creator Joseph Hewitt stopped by to let us know that mecha roguelike GearHead 2 is now a full game.

GearHead2 has just passed one of the big developmental milestones: it's finally possible to win the RPG campaign. To celebrate this occasion, the developer is holding a competition. Anybody who completes the game and submits their victory file before January 31st 2009 will receive a postcard from Korea.

About the game:

GearHead2 is a scifi mecha roguelike RPG.Set five years after the events of GearHead: Arena, the solar system is in turmoil as tensions between Earth and Luna threaten to break into full scale war. The main plot for its role playing campaign is created by a random story generator and should be different on each playthrough. Both random circumstances and the player's own choices can affect the direction of the plot.

Cool. Gearhead is probably second only to ADOM in its creativity, uniqueness, and general balance. The best roguelikes come from individual Overmen, not dork committees.

Finally a neo-nazi I disagree with.

I tried playing Nethack the other day but since combat consists of "push the direction key into the monster" I got bored with it real fast.

Once you know all the frustrating deaths, the point of playing Nethack and most Roguelikes of that generation is the mild pleasure of concentrating on not doing anything obviously idiotic for several hours.

First try one of the two Gearheads if you haven't already and like mecha.

Maybe try this one too. The creator claims it evolved from Neurohack.

I concur. Transcendence is very polished and looks and feels professional.

GearHead, not so much.

The first GearHead is pretty brilliant, once you get used to the movement scheme of the mechas and the inane "chatting" with NPCs. I've tried one of the earlier versions of GH2 and I didn't really like the control scheme and actually preferred ASCII over the graphics.

GH2 is really, really raw at this point. I'm a hardcore fan of the first, so I tolerate GH2 well, but I would strongly recommend the first one instead to beginners.
