It's been revealed that Fallout: New Vegas, one of the few RPGs I was actually looking forward to, will use Valve's invasive, porn-deleting DRM system whether you buy it through Steam or not.

Will the PC retail game be able to be activated via Steam?
From @litrock via Twitter

Jason Bergman, Senior Producer at Bethesda Softworks: Yes. Fallout: New Vegas will fully utilize the Steamworks SDK. This means that retail PC copies will activate via Steam. We are also using Steam for achievements and other features (but not multiplayer, of course. FNV remains a single player only game).

Ok this doesn't sound good.

Anyone know how Valve's new DRM will work?

Yeah, you activate once when you install and then never have to worry about it again. Unlike GFWL this process functions.

You can play on as many machines as you want as steam uses accounts.

If you buy a physical copy you can download a digital version for free to skip the disc check.

Anybody who complains about them switching from GFWL to Steam is a fucking idiot.

qft, Steam is one of the few DRM systems that doesn't hurt legitimate customers, I've never had a problem for the 4 years I've used it.

It probably annoys the hell out of pirates, hence the butthurt.

Quite the contrary. Steam releases are easy to crack and they preload it right onto your computer for you, pirates don't even have to go to the trouble of appropriating one from the production line in order to have a cracked version out weeks before release. I think there are a lot of people that assume steam = unpiratable, though, and that means they don't even bother checking if sites have it.

What if the Steam-Service is deactivated and you want to install the game again after years?

Valve says all the games on steam will be stripped of all DRM if that happens, but it hasn't happened so who knows. By the time Steam goes down forever New Vegas will be $2.99

Does that mean I'm required to install Steam in order to activate this game?

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I have literally no experiences with Steam and its DRM whatsoever.

thanks. But I somehow doubt that they are interested in releasing patches for all their distributed games if they are going bankrupt :? . Plus I don´t want to get forced to install a software I have no use for.

If there is a good crack available I will consider buying the game.
