What does he mean? 'small games'? It makes no sense to me.

I suppose he means that his company, "Portalarium" is finally going to release something other than casual casino games, namely, an rpg. Unfortunately, it's sure to be some kind of browser based social networking shite.
Though I could be wrong.

Garriott reemerged to announce his return to the gaming sector as vice president and creative director of Portalarium, a start-up aimed at creating open-source social-networking platforms. Garriott is joined in the venture by a trio of NCsoft defectors: Dallas Snell (chairman and development director), Fred Schmidt (CEO and publishing director), and Stephen Nichols (VP and technical director).

Portalarium's first project, called the Portalarium Player, is a Web browser plug-in that lets developers port games built on a number of different game engines and technologies to social networks, such as Facebook. The first product to make use of this technology is Sweet @$! Poker, which is currently available as a Windows PC app and Facebook game.

Portalarium's PortCasino Blackjack now in beta. Come check it out on FB and hi5! Direct link off our PortCasino Poker lobby. Come play!

Facebook? Online Poker? Fuck that. He is talking a whole lot of shit and by the look of his recent ventures deserves no attention whatsoever. RPG fans go back to sleep.

Insulting

Bloody fool. I think he lost his brain on the internet somewhere, or in space. I wish he would go back to making the games he was good at, you know, the games that actually made him money before Ultima 8.

I wish this means good news, i am tempted to believe he could make again glorious single player games like the ultima.
Better not have too high expectations ,it could be another mmo or a facebook game.If there 's annoucement of a true game , not even a rpg but a true game something like geneforge for example i will be opening a bottle of champagne, and share it( well spiritually ..) with the codex.

In space most likely. His twitter account is him in a space suit with the stars in the background and all that crap.

Honestly I think his interest in RPGs was just a phase in his grand vision of wealth and entrepreneurship and he decided to simply run with it when the Ultima games became a success. He seems to want to do whatever is going to make the most money in the least respectable way possible, i.e. Facebook games, online gambling, MMORPGs. I don't really understand it; where is the integrity or legacy in that?

And to think once upon a time he was seen as the most important figure in the CRPG world.

It should be taken as a lesson I think; those who purport their virtue and dedication to something no matter how sincere they seem or how much talent they appear to carry, it can just as easily be reduced to purely selfish motivations for greed, fame and popularity. He is not the only one either. Peter Molyneux anyone?

I think you're right, except I think he's always had some screws loose. This is a guy who adopted his "Lord British" persona semi-permanently and tried to roleplay it fulltime way back in the early 1980s when he was just a kid and nobody knew who he was. He's the guy that the media was warning people to watch out for when they were on and on about how harmful D&D was. I'm surprised he was able to hold it together as long as he was, actually.

By the way, he lost it was back in the early 1990s. Before the internet was widely available, but if you can get hold of some game mags from back then you'll see him going on and on about how great "Myst" was (if you don't know it was basically a slide-show that shipped on CD and was disguised as an "adventure" game where the player wandered around finding new slides to view) and how that kind of experience was the future of PC gaming.

And this was right after Origin shipped Ultima VII and Ultima Underworld, which were their last good games.

Yeah, I suppose it was if by "puzzle" you mean "move your mouse around until you find a hotpsot that will advance to the next slide" :)

Looing forward to even more decline. :salute:
At this point I dont think I'd trust anyone else but me to make a new and good RPG.

More like a childish hobby which became lucrative by sheer luck which now however doesn't have that potential anymore.

Rubbish.

Crusader series come after that as well WC III and IV, not to mention Jane's Combat Simulations: AH-64D Longbow (that Origin did).

Reminds me of Avellone, from D&D basement dweller to nerd God, trying desperately to be one of the cool kids.
Alpha Herp Derp Brotocol anyone?

I think the reason Garriot did fantasy RPG's was because of the D&D craze that was at its peak in popularity from 1977 to the early 80's which is right when he got started.

So, I would be surprised if he ever did another Ultima'ish game. I don't hold out any hope, but would be greatly interested if he did.

I dont think the guy is crazy though, not sure why you all think that. He is eccentric and likes dorky and geeky things, but arent we all like that on these boards? I mean dont we all wish we could have a freakin real dungeon in our house?

This is why I've given up on RPGs.

I now devote my time exclusively to billiards, whist and seducing young heiresses.

Crusader was shit. In fact it was so bad that it was after buying Crusader and seeing what a shit game it after all the hype origin piled on it that I kinda gave up on OS.

You don't get to count the Wing Commander games because those were Chris Robert's and not Lord Bullshit's babies.

And Flight Sims? Seriously? Not even gonna comment on that except to say that AH-64 was not a good example of a flight sim.

Dude, it was the end of an era when Lord Bullshit got PKed during the opening ceremony of Ultima Online.

A lot of people could, if they really wanted to. No one will though.

Anyway, British lost his marbles a long time ago, and hasn't been relevant to RPGs in quite a while. Don't expect a triumphant comeback or anything of the sort.
