GameBanshee has plopped up an interview with Obsidian folks about general stuff and some Neverwinter Nights 2 things as well. Here's a bit about scoring refugees and cheap furniture because I love bargains more than I liked the original Neverwinter Nights:

GB: How many former Black Isle employees are with Obsidian now, and are you able to tell us which ones are now there and what previous RPGs they've worked on? Have you picked up any new members after Troika's closing?
JM: We have several former Black Isle employees here at Obsidian. From our founders down through the ranks, there are several in each department, forming the backbone of what Obsidian has become. Most of them were working on titles like FR6 and Fallout3 when Interplay started its decline into oblivion. And yes we've picked up other employees (and furniture) from the closing of nearby companies. That's one of the great things about this business, there are only a few degrees of separation between everyone, so when a closing happens, we always have old friends and colleagues applying soon after. Which is great, because we love to scoop up the guys we know are talented before they get offers from somewhere else.

So, anyone got a ping pong table?

GB: We've heard a rumor that you may have acquired the Icewind Dale license from Interplay. Is there any truth to this?

JM: Feargus had the foresight to buy several assets from Interplay as it collapsed. It's a great opportunity for some of that work and effort to shine when otherwise it might not ever see the light of day.

Holy shit, I hope he doesn't mean the old Fallout designs. IDW 2 may play in the same league as IWD 1 but it is known under which horrid conditions it was developed. Too bad Feargus didn't have the cash to aquire the Fallout license as well.

Oh well, one can hope that New Jersey isn't the new and improved console-only Icewind Dale 3.

That would be my worst nightmare!

Seriously though how would this work? Surely IWD3 could only be published by Atari, so the licence would have to be purchased from them rather than Ineptplay. Perhaps they are rather referring to engine assets/concept art?

In any case, I would not be surprised if Obsidian produce an IWD3 title utilising a modified NWN2 engine eventually. Feargus has waxed lyrical about going back to IWD before.

Maybe they actually will be hired by Bethesda to make a re-make of Van Buren as Fallout 3? I know that Bethesda got all Fallout stuff from FO1, FO2, FOT and even FOBOS from IPLY, but not VB documents...

They bought the art assets, because they made them and the art is better off in their hands than it is on one of Herve's computers. It has nothing to do with the licence. What's wrong with that?
