There's a bunch of screenshots and a little text about Hellgate London over at WorthPlaying. None of them show the third person melee combat, which is probably the only thing that interests me about this game so far. Anyway, here's a bit of the text:

Set twenty-five years in the future, Hellgate: London introduces a world devastated by a demon invasion and a desolate city scorched by hellfire where mankind has gone underground to survive. Among them are the Templar, an archaic and secret society that foresaw this demonic apocalypse centuries ago. Followers of arcane rites, the Templar combine futuristic technology with ancient artifacts to forge powerful weapons and armor. The mystic sanctuary of the Underground system provides players safe conduct throughout the sprawling metropolis of London as they seek to preserve the bloodline of man and gain a foothold against the minions of darkness.

So.. Doom Ex?

Sounds good to me. Oh yeah, some of the people here (at the Codex) who went to E3 have seen the 3rd person stuff. I think there's a trailer on gamespot that shows that too.

Why didn't they just call the game Hellgate? Someone should slap the wrists of the developers the moment they are seen to be considering putting a colon or a hyphen in a game title.

Kind of makes it hard to name an expansion pack, doesn't it? Well, unless the expansion is something like, "Hellgate: New York" or something.

They'll just name it something generic like 'Hellgate: London - DOOM OF MANKIND' or 'The Reckoning'

And why is there always an ancient order that foresees stuff all the time? it sounds so cheesy.

I just cant understand how random maps work with real locations.

Random Templar: Oh, so Thames is on the other side now

Yeah, I don't see why they had to add a colon. "Hellgate" could've been the title and "London" could've been the name, and both could've been used together like "Darth Vader". Well, assuming that there are more hellgates under other cities, but why wouldn't there be?

That's one thought that crossed my mind when I had watched the trailer. How incredibly easy it'd be to come up with the expansion packs. Just add new cities after "Hellgate", and change the architecture. Who wouldn't want their very own city to be visited by a host of demons?

All in all I'm pretty disappointed with what I've seen. From the concept art I thought the game would sport demons that looked more like the ones in Hellraiser, but in the screenshots and the trailer they looked more like generic monsters, even though one type of demon seemed to share some facial features with that eyeless guy with clattering teeth from one of the movies. But they all seemed to behave like regular old monsters, and they all looked like they came from the burning pits of hell rather than the cold, dark and demented place I was hoping for. I wanted cyborg demons, not Diablo escapees!

I don't think I'm going to be able to muster enough demonkilling spirit to get this game.

It's the first of a series of several Hellgate games. According to Bill Roper, Konami has signed them on to make follow-ups including Hellgate: Las Vegas, Hellgate: Rome and Hellgate: New York. Basically, as the story goes, the demons that invaded Earth tend to make locations with underground complexes their base of operations, because it's easy for them to convert those areas into dungeons or what have you. London for instance has "The Tube" giant subway complex, and the old catacombs underneath the palace and the Tower of London which will probably be in the game as a permanent rather than random fixture, like the Durance of Hate in Diablo 2.

New York has Grand Central Station, the engineering tunnels under Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan, and a whole bunch of old, buried subway routes. Rome has the ancient sewers and catacombs, and so on and so forth. It makes for a neat setting.

Eh, there's no doubt there will be a cyberdemon or two. After all, your high tech guns are 'spell delivery systems' rather than 'firearms'. There's no reason why demons can't be equipped with similar high tech weaponry to deliver their spells, either.

same feeling here. i watched the trailer and it felt like a mess, with dull monsters and even duller combat.

they may improve it though, but what the E3 trailer showed has been dissapointing so far.

Oh shitcock. Yeah, it's Namco. I'll just start referring to it as PRODIGAL JAPANESE PUBLISHER THAT MAKES PC GAMES EXCLUSIVELY IN THE US.

Ah, so there is a grand plan to milk this for all it's worth right from the start then with many quick updates? I suppose it will be like the sports games from EA? I still prefer short titles (and one-word if possible), though this one is far from being the worst.

The worst title I can think of currently is probably Divine Divinity. It's too bad such a kick-ass game got such a shit title. Though the other name they had for it wasn't a winner, either.

Unpronounceable or confusing titles are bad 'uns too. I'm sure there were people who had trouble buying Deus Ex as they had no idea how to say it.

Yeah, well, that just doesn't do it for me. I want demons like these.

Deuce Ex? Nope, that's wrong. It's Day-us Ex.

I doubt they'll release more than a game a year.

Why does the Codex cover Hellgate: London? It's an FPS... =/

No, it has random maps. So apparently it's a "rogue like". Just like PN 03 (hey, you guys forgot to cover that).

It also has a ToHit system based on the character system of the game to determine when you've shot something rather than a simple collision check like an FPS has.
