As RockPaperShotgun informs us, the updated PC version of Final Fantasy VII that makes it compatible with modern systems has been released today, also featuring cloud saves and an in-game cheat feature. I'm not making that up.

It already happened once, but that didn’t stop Square Enix from doing it again and releasing Final Fantasy VII on the PC. Unlike the majority off re-releases, there’s not even a hint of HD about this return to the most beloved game JRPG of the PlayStation 1 generation. So what gives?

The update are more about groundwork so it can be played on modern systems. So while you can download it and play it on your quad-core Intel beasts, it still has the midi music and plasticy looking characters. There is cloud saving and achievements, but there’s also grainy FMV. The game is absolutely the same one from the 90s, although this version has an in-built cheat that allows you to boost your stats to maximum, to allow you to carry on with your adventure. Does that mean we were harder, and more willing to accept potential defeat all those years ago?

Whaddya know, there is even a launch trailer:

You can grab the game here if you swing that way.

Cheat to boost your stats? This bodes well for future Square Enix games in terms of difficulty.

We are not breeding chocobos with this one, but a generation of idiot douchebags who think a gameover is a sign of a badly programmed game.

Which would look better? To play it with a PSX emulator or this re-release?

Pushing a button a thousand times for max stats vs pushing a button once - which is better and why?

The original PC release with various mods. Though I expect those will probably be ported to this one.

Wow....biuld-in cheats...and this was one of the easiest FF of all times, I never had to grind and Sephiroth was faceroll by just doing the ultimate weapons sidequests (the equips, not the monsters)...

What's the problem with ingame cheats? They're nice to have and redact nothing of the non-cheating experience, for example does it make DOOM an easy game that you can just type IDDQD?

Final Fantasy 7 is one of the easiest games ever made. Unless you count the optional weapon bosses it's almost impossible to die. Even Sephiroth's big attack only gives negative status effects. I beat it in 23 hours in one sitting and never even used anything beyond behamut and level 2 limit breaks. Not even the most popamole of decliners would have to cheat on this one.

The music's pretty cool as is though.

It still has the MIDI music? Nice. I wonder how this will sound in my General MIDI Roland JV-1080?

Indeed. Using the shitty on-board MIDI on your sound card is NOTHING like hearing it through the FABULOUS Roland JV-1080, or the CM-500 for that matter.

I remember FF7 pc had a nice built-in software midi synth (some yamaha emulator, afair), much better than the general midi support of sound blasters.

Yes, it also came with several Soundfonts, tailor-made for the Sound Blaster AWE cards that were popular at the time.

Neither: the original PC version with mods.

I'm not sure if mods work with this re-release, but they allow things like using the high-quality battle models outside of battle. Also you can use the original PSX music, not the mangled MIDI shit.

First of all, PSX version didn't use MIDI, but other format of slightly better quality.
Second, there's just a little difference of PC MIDI version on the on- board SB64 and SB128, so what's your problem.

I would have expected more fanfare for that release considering FF7 is supposedly Square's greatest accomplishement.
