A GOG.com representative has left a message in our inbox, informing us about "a new amazing stacking promo for Gothic" they currently have; check it out.

The whole Gothic Series, one of the most acclaimed and memorable cRPG sagas with great immersive gameplay, distinctive atmosphere, and an incredibly vast world to explore, is available up to 75% off today on GOG.com. That means you can get Gothic, Gothic 2 Gold Edition, Gothic 3, and Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods Enhanced Edition for as little as $2.49 each for the next 24 hours!

Gothic Series is famous for the way it allows you to immerse yourself in the deep and vivid fantasy realm. It's hard to find its match for the amount of interaction and freedom to choose your own path. Even the first Gothic game, which took place in a secluded prison colony limited by a impenetrable magical wall, offered more variation and space than most of other role-playing games at the time. More importantly, the player was offered a choice of his path and his decisions really affected the gameworld's reality, creating a feeling of relevance to every step you took. The following games of the series brought us even spacier lands to explore, so once you embark on your journey to Myrtana, prepare for a long stay. The complete Gothic Series can keep you entertained for hours, and hours!

Today's Classic Gem promo is a stacking promo, so the amount of discount grows with every item you place in your shopping cart (from 50% on a single game to a whole 75% discount at four). The games you already have count towards the discount, so don't miss this great opportunity to complete your Gothic Series collection on GOG.com. The offer lasts until Tuesday, April 23, at 9:59AM GMT.

Buy the games here (<-- this is an affiliated link; by buying stuff via this link you also support the Codex a bit). This promo offer ends in 24 hours, so you'd better hurry if you want to make use of it.

Since I have 500+ games waiting in my backlog, I've decided not to buy sequels to games I have not finished playing yet.
Gothic 2 is one of these games.

Hmmm no thanks, I don't think I'd even play for free these action-adventure-rpg hybrids. I don't like the limited classes/guilds, superficial customization, and lack of parties besides a follower or two (followers always felt like major exploits in a game focused around 1 dude). Being one or two steps above a Bethesda game is little more than noteworthy.

Having said that, these games have great atmosphere and somewhat memorable characters with witty dialogue and if that's all you need for a fix than go for it! The combat is controversial but I didn't mind it, looking at it from an action point of view.

Gothic 1 and 2 have very good level designed and interesting to explore worlds, much better than many class/party-based crpgs.

Dragon Age doesn't count. And I did say that it had great atmosphere/exploration/whatever but that's hardly enough to firmly keep any long term devotion to the series.

Got G1, G2 NOTR, and G3 for like $5 total on Steam years ago. And before anyone says DRM free... well... guess I can always just grab the GOG copy floating around the net should Steam ever shut down. Although I'm almost positive the 'Steam' versions of G1 and G2 can be launched independent of Steam. G3 is okay. Forsaken Gods is crap.

Because party based crpg's are so rpg. If you want to loose something really special and unique just because it's 'action adventure crpg hybrid' it's your loss. There is no other game like gothic 1/2 NotR in terms of interactive and immersive world design.

You have your opinion, I get mine. I found the mechanics, although not bad in their own right, to be very superficial. The world is rich, sure but one could also say that Skyrim has a well crafted world, and I would agree with that to. Doesn't mean I like them though. In fact, I like Gothic 1 and 2 more than Skyrim because of the sharper focus and better characters/writing. To me though, you need a little bit more than that, and I will admit to my bias for games like Baldur's Gate and ToEE as more to my adherence, rather than Ultima 7 and it's offspring, so I can understand why some may hold the Gothic series on a pedestal in that regard.

I would say its worth 2.50 with the community patch. It's a pretty subjective ordeal but I thoroughly enjoyed the exploration and huge game world, and the periodic deer hunting simulation.

The combat is wonky, the quests are pretty shallow, but it does let you experience some large scale change with its horrid group v group revolutions. It's unfortunate that PB was desperately reaching for that Oblivion market but eh.

Gothic 1 & 2 are must plays. Gothic 3...not so much. I like the setup and some of the gameplay changes, but its MMO quest design makes the game tedious and the sense of exploration just isn't as good as the first two games.

I thought I read you hating on G3 in older threads, due to the exploration letdown. Have you changed your mind?

Jetzt kann ich diese Serie auf Deutsch spielen. :incline:
Fürwahr?

Last I checked GOG only had the English versions and there was apparently no way to hack in the German localization. Has that changed?

I hate it in relation to the first two games (and to some extent Risen). That said I can appreciate the ambition behind it: they wanted to make a massive world and populate the whole main content but ultimately a good 60% or more of the area is just a bland hiking simulator. Randomized chests don't help, nor do the MMO style quests/rep system, and horrible melee combat. Far too many negatives for me to say it's a good... or even acceptable game. If you're a Gothic fan then it's worth experiencing just to see their ambition in practice but, for most people, it will wind up being a severe disappointment.

Mechanically speaking Risen is far superior although it feels more like an amalgam of Gothic 1 and 2.

If you do own the other games on GOG and can get it for $2.50ish I'd say go ahead.

The German versions are tempting...
