This is a great JRPG but you can definitely see the engine struggling with the game and were the dev had to cut corners to prevent it breaking completely.

What's there to lose if one doesn't play with the patch?

The +18 one? I am not sure as I never played without the patch but I imagine several characters will have their designs censored or toned down, all porn scenes will be removed including both the optional and the history relevant ones, the BDSM/bad ending dungeon is also probably removed, there is a kingdom that is pretty much all about H scenes so I imagine that is also cut out of the game or massively reduced, you can use a nude skin for the characters so that is probably out too, etc.

Bought the game. Gonna try it soon. Thanks for the hint.

I've been on a small RPGMaker kick lately and I highly recommend playing this not-so-little game!

Very gameplay focused, heavy emphasis on exploration and mechanics first. Dialogue is meant to be just for the memes and injokes within the japanese viprpg community, story is bare.

I've completed it on hardcore mode (aka no grinding/respawning enemies) and it had quite a challenging later part of the game.

The Engine had its day back around the late 00's/early 2010's with actual games with stories to them like Witches house. Now its just primarily used for asset flips and or porn and should be taken out back and mercy killed.

In no particular order:

Omori (Dec 25, 2020)
Felvidek (Mar 29, 2024)
Fear & Hunger (Dec 11, 2018)
Fear & Hunger 2 (Dec 9, 2022)
The Coffin of Andy and Leyley (Oct 13, 2023)
Hylics 2 (Jun 22, 2020)
Tales of the Black Forest (Sep 25, 2019)
Abaddon Princess of Decay (October 20, 2021)
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass (Aug 7, 2018)
Wooden Ocean (Jun 10, 2020)
Causality (Apr 16, 2021)

There were always shitty asset flip games on rpgmaker way before the early 2010's. You don't remember them because of selective attention. The state of rpgmaker releases isn't wildly different now then it used to be. In the past 5 years we have seen a lot of gems that stand out from the low effort trash. If anything, the newer iterations are allowing devs to actualize their games way easier than back in the 00's and 2010's. Your take on this topic should be taken out back and mercy killed.

I sell Steam Cards from my other games on the marketplace and I usually convert the money on cheap RPG Maker games. I have, never, ever regretted the purchase this way.

At the end of the day what you do with the engine is more important than the engine itself. That said, I could never get in to the aesthetic used by most RPG Maker games and I'm usually not particularly inclined to give them a second glance.

Slightly off topic, but I genuinely wish the engine used in NWN was available for commercial projects. It is super easy to pick up and I personally like the visuals way better than the pixel art of RPG Maker. The fact that everything that comes out with it is free (if you own NWN) is awesome but the audience is small and the inability to make any money other than goodwill donations means some people/indie teams who might otherwise use it to make some excellent games are spending their time on more time consuming engines.

I know it'll never happen for a whole host of reasons, and I fully acknowledge that I am biased because I've played a ton of NWN modules over the years (and built a couple of my own). I also know some people can't stand NWN... to each their own!

Generally I'm not interested. I used to love JRPGs back in the day but nowadays, no.

How does one spend their time in a JRPG?
* Walking around excruciatingly slowly in a huge world filled with random trash encounters to waste your time. If you're lucky, at best the world will be mostly empty.
* Clicking on every NPC in sight so they can say thrilling things like "The town is pleasant"
* Clicking on every trash can in sight so you can find things like Eye Drops or Green Cherry which no one will ever, ever use
* Low-effort "Fight, Item, Magic" combat which is bad. Why would I choose this over a proper TBT?
* Suffering through long cutscenes hoping to get back quickly to the bad gameplay to at least make some damn progress
* Managing inventory and comparing tiny numbers on Hardwood Sword vs. Bone Sword

The only possibly exciting thing is #5. Cutscenes can be good if the story is brilliant. Is your story so brilliant that it makes up for how much of a drag everything else is?
