The most efficient way of playing the game is always to take as many opportunities you have to maximize your spoils. This would not necessarily be a bad thing in itself if you were nonetheless acknowledged some alternatives. The guild plot-lines are fun but is there any central difference to a character's potential motivations for joining the Thieves or Merchants (etc.) seeing as how most factions are in it for fun and profit expanding their guild's influence? In contrast, your character in New Vegas, for example, has a pretty clear idea of what the main factions intend to do and the player is given the opportunity of adding his own motivations into play for helping the people (s)he chose to.
The main factions are the three Noble Houses not the guilds.

Imo displaying a screen of pre-new game text that says something like:

"The world of AoD is not what you are used to in a fantasy RPG: it is harsh, unforgiving, blah de blah scheming and murder blah blah. Unlike in many other games, you are not an invincible hero. You are not special. All combat is extremely dangerous and potentially lethal; if something looks dangerous, it probably is dangerous, and you should treat it as such. Characters will not hesitate to lie to you, steal from you, or betray you, should they see fit. Use your head, be careful what you say, and always look out for yourself, because no one else will."

I don't think you can use others' trademarks (Superman and kryptonite) like that in your game.

Yeah, no, copyright law does not work like that.
Haha, I almost made this exact same post. If copyrights worked like that, I probably would have been killed by a firing squad by now.
I'm not a copyright specialist, but I can remember a famous hip-hop/turntablist band from NY who had to change their name from X-Men for X-ecutioners (feat Grandmaster Roc Raida), because of the Marvel's trademark. But I guess AoD is not a major exemple of robbery for the owner of the rights

He's not calling his game Superman of Decadence, he's referring to Superman in a fair use protected way.

What they are kindly trying to explain to you is that its not robbery, the law allows the use of protected intellectual property under a lot of special circumstances, this is one of them.

You don't actually do that sort of thing very often in jRPGs. Yet another reason why the West is in decline.

I think the number of Final Fantasies where you don't attempt an assassination is lower than the number where you do.

And robbery is largely accepted in JRPGs, people dont even bother resisting, they just let you go tru their shit and take whatever you want.

Is this any different in Skyrim?

While Age of Decadence is a flawed game, I must say I had more fun with its early access than with the likes of Kickstarter games such as Shadowderp Returns or Bannu Saga. Codex loves its iPad games, apparently.
