These actually aren't that bad... relieving, even, because except for needing to replace a bad gig of RAM, I don't have to fudge any requirements. I've been on the same desktop for six years, barring a post-death mobo/processor replacement maybe 6-12 months after that - water damange, it was covered. Bought and built an AMD64 3500, Radeon 9800, 2gb - great price / power at the right time, got it all for around $750 (admittedly an awesome deal, probably should have been $850/$900.)
Ran everything I wanted - some serious surprises what I could pull off options-wise too - right up until Shader 3.0 became obligatory, after AGP became a dirty word. Luckily I grabbed one of those AGP R3850s last winter, nicely cooled oc'able model for under* $200, and I recently learned of a "farewell" to socket 939, being a modest dual core, still clocked faster than my single. It goes for $60.
That's the price of a console game (or two ports thereof
![lol  ](/forums/smiles/icon_lol.gif)
) If I drop that in, I'll have made it from the early days of "last gen" through most likely the twilight of this one, when PC game engines are built for "next next gen," PC games using these sold only to recoup costs while waiting for the consoles to launch. And I'll have done it for about $1000, plus whatever 1 GB of old RAM costs. That's the same, if not better, than two consoles at launch and some shitty "business" PC monetarily, and I'm definitely a lot fonder of it.
I can't imagine how cheap it must be to build a computer >= this, only with more a longer upgrade life, (all I can really do after this is double up the memory a couple of times.) There's your console-priced gaming computer, and it will probably last you halfway through the next generation before you can drop in some "obsolete" parts that are still upgrades to you anyway. There's definitely a feeling of needing to buy the best, "so it lasts longer," when you upgrade, but it usually pays to buy just behind the curve, unless you're a die-hard member of the kool-aid club.
