Am I doing it wrong? (Arcanum)

I got bored rather quickly. I made it to Tarant, and talked to zombie dwarf faggots and gave that guy his ring. I know I am not very far, but the combat blows. I basically just cast harm until I run out of stamina, then run away while the ogre guy beats them, then rest. Should I keep going, or is the whole game like this?

Insert clever insult here
Keep going. Unless reading the dialog is something you skip over... Oh, you will soon face enemies that are invulnerable to Harm so combat will be slightly more challenging. But combat is the weakest link of Arcanum.

Othewise it's the third member of the Holy Trinity so keep going!

I guess that's OK. It took me 5 years of futile attempts to finally get into Arcanum and complete it. My only regret in the end was that it took 5 years although the combat is a real showstopper at times.

If yr playing Arcanum for the combat, yr in the wrong game.

Combat is filler in between dialogues.

Codex 2014 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy
For an interesting twist, play a Technologist and skip completely on Magick.

When I first came to the Codex I was surprised that the people here love Arcanum, Fallout and PST I can understand. Tarant is imo the best part of this game, my most memorable experience of this game was that 9/11 happened while I was playing it.

Mods did fix some of the unbalanced aspects of the game.

Thats the right idea. Magic is waay to overpowered. Tech is much more fun anyways

I think the unnoficial patch sort of makes Tech more appealing.

I tried it first with a tech, got bored. Then tried it as a mage, and got farther (most magic sucks, though. The ones that raise attrbutes are pure lol, and easily exploitable)

If Tarant bores you, stop playing. Really. I found Tarant to be the most interesting place in Arcanum, but after that, it's only going downhill with some minor :inclines: here and there (mainly Stillwater and Caladon).

I've always found the Guardian Ogre to be overpowered considering how early in the game you can get it. They vastly outstrip Orcish Champions, and will make a lot of the nearby areas cakewalks.

Even with Carcanum installed, which gives the enemies all kinds of immunities, resistances and powerups, while nerfing Harm.

As unfunny as the meme is, if you're having trouble with combat or just want to focus on the writing instead of the reloading:

I actually prefer getting the mutt as early as possible since it allows you to relax on your combat skills a bit and focus on actual roleplaying. In some fanmade patches the dog is pretty crap though, so it will depend on what you've got installed.

Try to ignore the shitty combat and after a while you'll be hooked by the beautifully crafted world and interesting quests.

Playing a tech melee is super overpowered. After obtaining pyro axe, you can steamroll the game.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
Using weapons at all is overpowered in Arcanum.
Using only thrown items is overpowered.
Unarmed combat is overpowered.
NPC followers? Overpowered. Fuck that shit, play the game blindfolded.

I was overwhelmed at how shitty the combat in Arcanum was when I first played it. I'm no RPG expert who has played every single dungeon crawler from the 70's and 80's, but I can't imagine there being an RPG with worse combat than Arcanum. I just can't. Still a fun game though with a mind blowingly awesome sound track.

It's pretty much identical to Fallout's.

And PS:T had worse combat.

I can't call Arcanums combat bad, it's just very simple. If you're speaking of TB of course, haven't played with realtime combat much.

Ultima VII and Arcanum realtime are contenders for horrible combat. Begin combat and both games' parties rush off whacking away.
