Due to popular demand:
LINK TO THE FULL LIST IS IN MY SIG.
I DID NOT MAKE THIS LIST BASED ON MY PREFERENCES, BUT ON CODEXER VOTES. 107 OF THEM TO BE PRECISE.
THERE ARE 389 TITLES ON THE FULL LIST. THESE ARE JUST THE TOP 25.
1 Fallout
- Isometric RPG goodness. Well paced, the sort of length it's easy to always replay because it's not a fucking project, good atmosphere which takes you away from all shit you don't want to think about, turn-based, on the easy side but that's sometimes all right. - Demnogonis Saastuttaja
- Interesting world, good music, characters, many ways of solving quest... well, it is a great game. - Konjad
-as expected
2 Fallout 2
- Just the best thing that happened to me in my gaming life. Loved every minute of it. Even the talking deathclaw. - pajak713
-although criticised heavily from Codex purebloods...
3 Planescape: Torment
- Beautiful story, characters, writing, music... well, you know I cried at the ending ;_; - Konjad
- hear that MCA? you make people cry
4 Deus Ex
- I can't remember how many times I've beaten it. – catfood
- Play it once every year. Its the story, the atmosphere, the dialogue, the emails, the books, the little ester eggs, the almost pseudo science, the clever placement of in game events, the characters that has always pulled me in. - Captain Shrek
- Replayable to infinity and looks better every year. - Reject_666_6
- I put on my trenchcoat. I hear mortars in the night. I've actually completed this RT rpg/shooter without killing a single person - except indirectly in a scripted sequence. Yes, that is the kind of game it is. - SCO
-highest ranking non-rpg on the list?
5 Jagged Alliance 2
- Because it's infinite charm and how damn comfortable and satisfying it is to play it. - Demnogonis Saastuttaja
- Certainly the most Codex-approved game on the list; it's accolades need not be rattled off. Generally it's a fun game to play, and with the options it provides, you can set up exactly the game-style you want. Companies today simply don't have the class Sir-Tech did, letting me avoid huge quantities of gun-porn, and silly sci-fi elements with the click of a few boxes. - Edward_R_Murrow
- Most fun combat ever. Also replayable to infinity. - Reject_666_6
- best TB squad game there is, and a quite capable little rpg lite. - SCO
6 The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
- this game was perfect for my love for exploration (well, actually Gothics were better but they had small worlds). I spent hundreds of hours just wandering around and staring at pretty graphic like a consoletard. The atmosphere was great too. Everything else was shit but I didn't care at the time as long as I could travel through unknown territories and feel the excitement of finding a new locations. – Konjad
- Morrowind ate my soul and gets credit for that alone. - sser
- highest ranked hiking simulator, beloved on the Codex for its rich lore full of phallic symbolism
7 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
- Awesome atmosphere, characters, graphic, music... and excellent dubbing! Well, everything in this game is perfect... except the sewers and the end-game - Konjad
8 Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn & ToB
- yeah, shit story, boring character progression, lame combat mechanics but still a really enjoyable game – ZbojLamignat
- Decline, popamole, yada, yada, yada. It's fun and hits the sweet spot, the right balance between hardcore gaming and ease of play, through design and a lack of certain turn-offs present in other titles. It's certainly not the mechanically best RPG by far, but it is the one I find most enjoyable. - Edward_R_Murrow
- the game everybody is ashamed to praise, perhaps it would've been higher if not for the peer pressure
9 Heroes of Might and Magic III
- Never loses its charm. - Reject_666_6
- hours and hours and hours and so on, playing on the hot seats. - pajak713
- Played the shit out of this as a kid - hoodoo
10 X-COM: UFO Defense
- If only psionics were not stupidly busted, and the "takeover" fleets did not spawn infinitely, this would be a damn near flawless masterpiece. Still, it's electronic crack at times. - Edward_R_Murrow
11 Sid Meier's Civilization IV
- summon Skyway
12 System Shock 2
13 Thief II: The Metal Age
- though thief 1 is better, thief 2 inherited and expanded on the modding community, that continues to this very day with very large and complex maps. I love the gameplay here. Ghosting is a nerve-wracking, extremely difficult gameplay. You'll only master thief after years, and then you can play the dark mod, that is harder. - SCO
14 Thief: The Dark Project
- Loved the setting. YES. Its in fact the single most important thing about thief I love. Its original and its great. Loved the in game quotes. Loved the atmosphere. They somehow managed it brilliantly well. Loved the dialogue/banter. - Captain Shrek
15 Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
- One of the few RPGs I replayed for the gameplay. - Reject_666_6
- seems it's in the holy trinity solely for its unrealised potential
16 Ultima VII: The Black Gate & Serpent Isle
- A wondrous accomplishment. So many places to explore in the wildness. The map isn't so big at first look, but every mountain, and many unreachable seas were actually used as space for dungeons. This is like a 2d gothic. - SCO
17 Sid Meier's Pirates!
- Just too much fun. - Krraloth
18 Baldur's Gate
- My first cRPG, started playing it when I was nine years old. I replayed it so many times I can't count, I probably knew 'everything' about this game, although time erases my memories. "Sandbox-like' game where you can go wherever you want anytime and every location is full of details and interesting encounters. Fights are generally challenging and with no dumb filler combat (minus MQ, especially the mine in Nashkeel) It was my favourite game for years, definitely until I played PST. Oh, and by the way I don't consider it as good after playing so many other great cRPGs but it has it's place because it introduced me to my favourite genre (and pretty much the only one I'm interested in) and I was obsessive about it for about 3 years, playing it nearly every day. - Konjad
- another Bioware gem
19 Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
-obviously no words are necessary
20 StarCraft & Brood War
21 Quake III: Arena
22 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
23 Star Wars: TIE Fighter
24 Gothic II & Night of the Raven
- Best action RPG ever made. Period. – catfood
- It's just... the music... and the world :melancholic cry: Atmosphere in this add-on to 'rather good' sequel to great game Gothic stroke me as nowhere else except Bloodlines. Beautiful music which makes the greatest atmosphere of mystery when you travel through the new part of the island, two original factions and main quest which deals with problems in the interesting way. And the world. It's one of the most beautiful... no, it's the most beautiful world ever created. - Konjad
25 TIE: Fallout: New Vegas || Master of Magic
- Even after all these years it's completely playable thanks to its friendly interface and highly customizable wizard.(MOM) – catfood
- there was a difference of one honourable mention, but I decided to ignore it
NOTES:
I took some minor liberties when deciding some ambiguous votes. Nothing of importance has changed.
The link to full list is in my sig. It is not yet fully finished, but I’ll sort it out.
If you notice some errors, I assure you it wasn’t on purpose. If you care enough, you can warn me about it.
The details columns are not for comment. According to Mobygames every game is an RPG, so I had to do some guesswork there. There are some minor trolling attempts in the genre column.
If anyone is butthurt over anything, I encourage you to share.
Also:
First I have fun playing a game, then I try to analyze and objectify its qualities. Doing the opposite is pointless and whoever does it should find another hobby. - janjetina
I notice that not as many active posters are putting their list into this one, which leads me to believe they are ashamed of the games they will put up. That would make sense given how much closer this list is to the collective gaming experiences of each person. – Excommunicator
