Considering it's a screenshot of one of the few possible iso/topdown crpgs in development (at least possible development) by a developer a lot of people here like (critique nonwithstanding), I can see why people react like that. It's like a teaser for a movie, or a picture of a nice meal - you sort of get hungry? Never underestimate the human brains power of association...

Actually, I think the Troika fanboys are hyped for the screenshots because it's Troika's screenshots. Though these screenshots look good; I liked Interplay's version of FO3 screenshots better. Just sayin'...

"Hope is the first step on the road to dissapointment"

Oh, Volourn. I actually liked both the VB and JE screenies, so I wouldn't agree. Although they were nice (further on in content - models et c), they didn't have the same ultra-l337 lighting and stuff, which Puuk seemed to admit over at NMA.

"ultra-l337 lighting and stuff,"

Meh. I tend not pay attention to that stuff so I arely notice it unless it's pointed out. It's not what I look for in graphics/screenshots.

"JE screenies"

Weird that you mention these... I didn't. Not to mention that's x-box. Don't let VD catch you bring up an x-box game as 'Codex only discuss PC RPGs here. LOL

Anyways, for the record, to me, JE looks to be the best looking game as far as graphics go out of any game that I pay attention to, imo... Too bad it's x-box.

If Leon had shown us screens of a map of a Vault in that engine, I think VB would be pretty solidly trumped. It's a tech demo; judge the tech, not the content.

Who says anyone is doing anything of the sort? Take your biases and don't tell us how to judge things with our own eyes. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure Whip was talking about Jefferson when he said JE. And anyways, on a pure technical basis, I really don't see how the VB screenies are better. Granted, this engine might look about the same once optimised for your average computer, but it's just a lot better looking.

Hmm.. Maybe Jefferson. Well, if he was, that's the first time I read anyone rfer to it as JE. Anyways, of course if one likes the FO3 screenshots; they should like Jefferson's as well since it was the same engine... Just sayin'.. :?

Yes, I was referring to Jeffy, when I said JE. Sort of common practice shorting it that way I thought, sorry. Getting messy with all these similar named games...

... not following Jade Empires, but watch a movie or something a while back. Does look promising enough to get for PC - if ported of course. I make a habit of not following X-box games, even though I have one in my closet!

Nah. Blame my BIO fanboyism. Thought I caught ya in a moment of BIO praising weakness! LOL :D

I was referring to the GUN!

Oh, yes. The game is already game of the year. That is what I meant when I reffered to the halberd/gun as 'awesome'.

Why the fuck can't I express admiration toward a cool fucking weapon?

The screenshots are badass. No one has said anything more than that.

Stop trying to pretend your cool by acting like you are 'above it all'.

p.s. Troika can do no wrong, they should rule Earth.

Hey, I completed all three campaigns for NWN - so I'm not all anti-bio. I just find that they get some more praise than they deserve, I also had some troubles with the horrible art direction in the game. WTF - clown suits?! That guy should be taken out and shot.

As for the X-box. I didn't even pay for it - an out of town friend bought it and stored it at my house so we could play some mp games when he's around.

Well for the public there wouldn`t be much diference between between Jefferson and this engine, except for the shadows, that were never properly developed, a few weird things used to happen, and that was not fixed on Van Buren. Now in terms of detail of a vault itt was possible to have more detail in VB, both Van Buren and this wouldpretty much look the same, IMO, the diference was in the number of polygons of the characters (much higher on this one, probably even higher that the ones in Jefferson) and the technics used on outdoors ground, with this one going for full bump-mapping, and in Jefferson and Van Buren they were using a trick with, er, another technic that i don`t remember. This one will surely look better, as far as i know, but i`m no expert.

So it would look better if both engines were fully developed, but not much better.

For developers, and thinking about the future, i`m pretty sure this one is more flexible and doesn`t have the limitations of serving a project intended to be released in december 2004, with just one animator (*sigh*) , so the Troika one is a winer there by a large scale, it can be used to do much more stuff than Jefferson one.

Now leaving the graphics, i hope they develop a small combat system ready for TB, like BIS did with Jefferson, that was set to be RT with a pause, but had the TB component in the hood already thinking about the future (namely fallout3). And i do hope they will someday make the FPSRPG game with iso/TB combat, i really liked the Krondor style.

Considering Leon stated the engine was capable of both first and third person, as well as overhead - it sure sounds like Troika could be using this engine, whatever project(s) they get to do after Bloodlines.

Easy hoss, no one was belittling you or your observation. I purposely did not use the quote function or attribute quotes to individuals because my point was about the general ambiance as opposed to any single reaction. And if you actually read the post, I was actually noting the optimism, not casting aspersions.

With respect to my "trying to be cool..." I assume that was in response to the percieved barb from me, so I'll also assume that, having now clarified, you can resolve that by yourself.

re: Taoreich

The tone of your post just seemed to be against any optimism and putting it down.

Volourn doesn't use the quote feature ever. So, I figured you were just lazy like him/her/it.

Your clarification is acknowledged.

You are wrong in your reasoning. I don't sue the quote feature because I am lazy. It's those who use the quote feature who are lazy. If I need to quote someone; i quote them; I don't allow the boards to babysit me.

Next.

Can anyone else hear the low humming of the orgasmic moans of Troika fanboys?
Speaking as a non-troika-fanboi, I've got a low orgasmic moan going myself. :)

Think these look really great. Definately hoping we see someting out of it.

"you're still lazy for never saying exactly who you're quoting."

if people can't recognize what they wrote just because it's in quotes; it's not my fault.

Is all of this kvelling really over a few screenshots of a tech demo?

Yes, yes it is.

Is the legacy of a game, now seven years old, truly great enough to overshadow the oft-acknowledged short-comings of Troika's products to the point where the codex is fawning over pretty pictures?

Yes, yes it is.

Let's have a quick baselining session, shall we?

No, no we shall not.

Is it possible that the Codex has, dare I say....hope?

Wait...Do you me the RPG Codex? Not fucking likely.

This screenshot looks pretty sweet. I can't wait until the game gets done in '09.

As for the mechs, Kamaz, you're the only one here who doesn't like mechs.

I loathe mechs.

Just saying ..
