You do realize you are playing an RPG and not a tactical combat sim, though. Fallout doesn't have terribly deep combat either, in fact it was even simper, but with nicer combat animations.

But in Fallout the combat is fun - partly because of the nicer animations, partly because of the TB-Combat (and yes, in my opinion it's even more tactical because of that) and partly because you can aim at single body parts. In The Fall you can crouch.

Apart from that Silver Style claims that The Fall provides "unprecedented tactical possibilities" (That's printed on the box: "...noch nie da gewesene taktische Möglichkeiten"). Now if that doesn't give me enough reason to whine, then it's the fact that the lead designer Carsten Strehse once came to the largest Jagged Alliance 2 fan-site and recruited fans by telling them that he's going to make a Fallout-Like tactical RPG. Yeah, later he retracted his words and said that The Fall would be more like NWN - but honestly, even NWN is more tactical due to the ability to use magic.

Just another view from Germany... ;)

I've been in the SilverStyle forum months before "The Fall" was released, and I had my hopes up high for some not too combat-based role-playing game with memorable characters. And I WAS impressed with how the creators of the game actually discussed with us in the forums.

I've bought "The Fall" on the first day of release, and I had to wait another six months before it even ran AT ALL. It was released in November 2004 and all those major, kingsize patches fixed almost nothing. Bugs all over, ranging from the install engine, which could never be fixed, of course, to every kind of crashes. Let alone the incredible loading times on some computers. I've counted up to five minutes once and that is not a joke. Furthermore, a lot of extras which were meant to be in the game are obviously omitted, for example the helicopters. I have no explanation for this besides:

Silver Style's programmers are really, really and unashamedly incompetent.

I would have moaned and played nonetheless, accepting those bugs, if only the storyline had not been disgustingly unimaginative, naive, dumb or morally stupid. There is a race called "Shadows", which is meant to be the good side; they are trying to turn the human race into Shadows as well, thus bringing any conflict between races to an end. Of course, no human would ever WANT to be turned into a "Shadow", as that would halve your life span. The creators of "The Fall" did not see that problem. As for the quests: Although every second quest seems to promise a peaceful or alternative solution, you'll still be stuck with having to kill A LOT of innocent people for the simple reason that there is no other way. If you chose not tho kill them, they normally attack you instantly so you HAVE TO. Really, I could have done that kind of story in kindergarten. The creators of "The Fall" are obviously the kind of people who do play pen & paper RPGs, but have never found out what to do on those evenings besides earning XP through slashing everyone in their way and those behind them.

There are gazillions of better games out there. Get those, really, 'cause you won't have any fun with "The Fall". If it doesn't reach the US, be happy. I'd be, too. Silver Style's game was embarrassing enough in European countries.

my view about the fall...

playing a game like The Fall.. is for ME not playing like playing other PCgames, because every game, every film, every story... in a world like "fallout" is a piece, a piece which adds more content to "my" sight or/and my "thoughts about a world like "after the/a fall
of mankind"... Add. i grown up with games which very so simple that you had to feel into the story because there was no grafic, no real sound... only beeps and some ascii code :)...

I like "The Fall" because its a new view into this world. If you expect to play fallout then pls wait for fallout 4 or what ever it will be named, but if you are interested in playing in a world after "the Fall"... whatever the fall is, then you will have fun.

I installed the german extd. 1.8, the 1.9 ptach and the actually 1.10beta patch. So far i've seen a few bugs, but i installed a beta-patch so i expected/wanted to have bugs :) hehe.

I played last year the game once through to the end, but the new added features from patch 1.9 and 1.10 pushed me to play it a second time. Add. i like to test/play the beta, because i know that SSE (devs) are quite deticated to fix all bugs they can. Visit the
german forums if you dont belief my words and remeber this is the 10th patch... But so far iam a bit "mad" because i cant find big-bad-bugs... only a few content related and maybe a bit "game-concerning" bugs... but no "game-killer"...

A few words about the game-mechanics behind. You play on maps, and you will travel between them on a static map, there is no "travel" like in fallout, but i never liked to travel on a game" map without have a "time-problem" like in fallout 1. Without realistic food, thirst and/or car-gas problems, a "game-map" is for me only a "not-used" feature... But thats only my opinion about it...

The fights are all "realtime" but you can hit space, like you know it from baldursgate or neverwinter nights or knights or the old republic or what ever other game, to freeze the game. The battle experience is quite nice, if you are able to start the fights, sometimes there are a few "scripted" fights which are a bit "hard" because you are in melee distance, 10 or more other bad guys around you and they have all big guns... hah, they die like flys... sometimes my people, too :(

You will meet a lot of different people and quests on your travel through the game, there is lot of fun, lots of challenges and quite a few things you never expected this way. But the whole story will never be as good as in fallout. For my opinion the game brings you

at the end only to the point where the game "fallout", beginns... But..., and thats i think, why i support SSE so much i can, because i want to bring it to an end, and it will not finish without a second Game. With playing "the fall" you know how the world changes this way, how it brings you (the player) in this situation, you know what you have done to reach this bit of peace and at the end you know what all can be lost,... if there is e.g. a second Game... :) and it could be darker than fallout ever was.

your start is as like as in every new game, you are a noob, new to the world and unproofen... the game starts with hate and with revenge... your revenge. But first you have to hunt "them" down and you have to improve yourself and your skills, If you like to
improve the ingame-difficulty - dont take all 5 team-members with you or try it alone if you think you can beat the world alone :)...(but there are a few (scripted) fights which i could not win alone, so far, maybe i try it again... but it frustrated me total at the
moment)...

i will now play a few more weeks, and if you like it i can write add some words about playing it...if you want. And pls dont dis me to much about my opinions. I like it, so or so... if you want to know something special from the game write me. thx for your time and keep the spirit from "fallout" however it - hopefully - never comes real.

jeez, Germans are like Russians. They love whatever games their country makes regardless of quality.

w00t! Avernum Avatar! Thought no one knew the series. (me first post)

Good one.
I hereby confess that germany produced a shitload of boring games for years, consisting only of tables (the data ones, not those in your living room).
But these dark times are gone: Proof
Just browse the list.

@Topic:
The Fall was bugged. Really bugged. In fact, you couldn't even run it properly on l33t machines. Yet it was [sarcasm] fun [/sarcasm] to play through it every time a new patch was released. We felt abused, beta-testing for foreigners - and we even paid for it! (~50€)
But Sylver Style respected our opinions, advices and/or carping.
Every new patch removed a lot of bugs, caused new ones and - the most important thing - heavily improved gameplay, like adding characters habit towards certain weapons, many of which have been changed (MP7 fsck yeah!) after discussing the probability of finding AKs in a post-nuclear America.

Be thankful for receiving such a heavenly product, tested by a sacred and god-fearing land such as ours.

Those kooky germans probably rounded up innocent people into Concentration Camps to have them beta-test it.
