The story briefly seems like it's getting interesting in the fourth map, then it shits itself hard, and the problems with the combat inflate to parody proportions. The only catharsis is that you can side with the bad guys right at the end, piss off all your dipshit Marvel-humour companions, and literally lay waste to Josh and Carrie's shitty setting, stabbing a few of those furry fuckers as you go.

It really is Dragon Age 2 - the mechanics are mediocre and end up stretched horribly thin. The plot is a mess that keeps making you think it might have something to it but then swerving hard into nursery-level stuff. You occasionally find your brain switching off and you enjoy the mindless rhythm of the combat, but then your brain is forced to swtich back on due to some bullshit and you remember the game sucks.

I have spent about 18 hours on this game and my thoughts can be summarised essentially as this: I do not recommend Avowed and I stand by my original assessment that Obsidian, ultimately, deserve to go out of business. The game has some decent elements but they're irrelevant in the face of how poor the overall quality of the game is. I wish I could say "there are signs of improvement here" or even "at least it's better than TOW", but not really. It's a replication of many of the same issues, and while it has a few positive moments and ideas, so did TOW - just not enough to save it from being colossal dog shit. Frustratingly, the game might have been solid with just a few different design choices made, a better writing team, and a less scatterbrained development cycle, but alas.

Now someone give me the latest on this game's sales, I want to know how fucked Obsidian are.

Gosh I have to take Yahtzee and her use of "darling" all the time makes me feel like I am in those garbage Hunger Game movies my little darlings. Miriamele's adventure in the Emerald Stair has concluded and the next stage of her journey has begun in Shatterscarp. Did any of you know that the region was once under the ocean? You can have this conversation with Marius but the detail is in the rocks when you are out there exploring. Very nice little detail I wanted to share. Um. Okay! Now that Giatta has joined up you can now leave a party member back at the camp and the way the story looks to be unfolding, once it is time to bring Yahtzee along, Kai and Marius will be the two left behind because you also need Giatta to come along. That is the only way you can not have members of your party tag along on your adventures.

Shatterscarp is large with long distances to journey to and from and on your first visit to Thirdborn many tasks will have you head back out under the hot sun to trek through the sandy desert. Some nice dialog references about Concelhaut too and a Temple to Wael was very unexpected to find. ALL THOSE EYES!

The region continues to be just as beautiful and stunning as those before and the vast open desert still has many hidden treasures to uncover. 80 hours in!

I never claimed that the game is "bad", if anything i explicitly wrote that i haven't played it. Also i do not see games as a binary "bad" or "good", i do not see a game having bad elements as automatically making the entire game bad (or the opposite) since games are made up of multiple elements, nor do i imply that if i say something about a game is good it means the entire game is good. For example when i mention that Oblivion has good use of its physics system in its dungeons that doesn't imply i believe its character progression system is also good because i didn't bring that up. I do not see the point of bring up the good aspects of something when i discuss its bad aspects nor the bad aspects of something when i discuss its good aspects.

In the case of Planescape Torment (which BTW was released several years after Ultima Underworld) for example, there have been a lot of criticisms over its gameplay - but that criticism doesn't extend to its narrative, someone criticizing PT's gameplay doesn't implicitly also criticize its writing or graphics or any other aspect of the game.

The same applies for Witcher 3 (in which BTW, if you attack a guard they'll attack you back - and IIRC if there are other guards around they join the fun) or really any other game.

No, those flaws are them making babby's first RPGs with no actual committment to choice, progression that shapes the player avatar and level scaling to appease

The issues about choice, progression, level scaling, etc are exactly Bethesda trying to improve on what they perceived as flaws in their previous game and, as i wrote, they fell flat on their face by making something worse. For example there is nothing "babby's first RPG" about Bethesda trying to ensure the enemies the player encounters are always posing a threat instead of quickly reaching a point where nothing poses danger to them. The issue with the game is how they went about addressing this.

The thing is a lot of people dismiss just how much wokeness and removing any edge can spoil a game, especially with the metaknowledge that its inclusion is exactly because the developer hates you and/or wants to preach to you his pervasive ideology. The soil erosion is applied to the heightmap. The term sounds fancy (marketers love that) but it is essentially a simple filter where you adjust the height based on the slope at each cell/pixel of the heightmap compared to the neighboring pixels. I just checked out a screenshot of the heightmap editor in Oblivion and AFAICT it also approximates sediment deposition (to approximate the effect of water on the terrain). This is usually an extra step, but it also works by adjusting the height - using some "water level" factor. Oblivion's approach actually seems to be quite simplistic as it doesn't seem to have a way to specify where water exists and probably applies a constant factor over the entire map. Some sort of "water mask" which would essentially be a grayscale image with water bodies like rivers, lakes, etc would have been trivial to add - though i guess that is on brand with Bethesda always doing the minimum they can get away with :-P.
