Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I still feel like I'm missing something important when playing BB. It's day 103 and my guys are just stepping into lvl 6.

I can't easily find 1-skull contracts in the early game. If I take lvl 2 contracts too early, I'll suffer injuries and casualties which will take me out of the game for a few days until eveyrone is healed. My observation is that caravan and courier contracts don't pay well, in addition to not bringing in any XP. The best contracts seem to be two-skull ones for around 1000 crowns which involve beasts. Around lvl 5, two unholds seem to be almost easy, if I use throwing nets. Overall, I can't find a way to generate money and xp fast enough.
My advice would be to worry less about injuries and deaths, and instead hire more people. Take on all the cheapos you can afford, fire the awful ones, keep the decent ones, and nurture the promising ones. Having more than 12 men in the roster is a great idea. Always fight bandits and always take bandit-related contracts.

This is something I haven't tried yet, I always try to keep the same guys, invest in them, and expand the team slowly.

Dogs and beggars are a good investment, buy them so they tank (and die) for your main bros.
I have a houndmaster in my current group, but I got kind of attached to the dog. I also produce dog armor from unholds, and I'm too stingy to risk the armor, so I only use the dogs to chase runners and finish off low-on-health enemies.

It has the same problem as courier missions - you spend time in which you are not gaining XP.
You are gaining xp. You need all your targeted settlements to be at least friendly, so you take contracts. Just don't take contract on raider lair if it's city where you sell your goods and it has ambushed trade roads. You want to keep this condition.

Go for brawlers and butchers. They are cheap but stronk. That's what i do at the start of the game - brawlers, butchers, apprentices and aiming for 12 bros asap.

Spam dogs, with or without armor. They can't get injuries and can take several hits before they die. They have 20 MDEF as well.

PETA won't like it but your bottom line will.

When you hire 8 grifters, it doesn't matter if 2 or 3 get injured and killed.
If you have enough money for five level-4 dudes in mail armour, you're probably better off with six or seven level-3 dudes in studded leather, at least in the early days.

I wonder if you're optimising travel times and routes; depending on the map, you can sometimes do two contracts a day, or at least a couple of contracts from a couple of different cities over a couple of days. Obviously this is dependent on contract spawns, so it's a best case scenario, but you shouldn't be wandering aimlessly for days very often.

Certainly temple healing is hard to afford early on, but there are plenty of injury types where you can still field your bros to battle, and with a bit of tactical adjustment (e.g. if it's a movement-based injury), still do fine.

Are you on V/V? Like Sarissofoi I usually say drop to Beginner economy for a smoother experience until it's all too easy.

I see what you mean. Yeah that's how I play - I patrol between 4-5 settlements which are close by. I buy and sell as I move from the villages to the city, and I am looking out for contracts.

Ok, so far I was spending some time playing with 6-8 guys before I move to 12. Regarding backgrounds, I would take daytalers, farmhands, miners, stonemasons usually.

I am optimizing ofcourse. I'm a longtime Railroad Tycoon II player. I try to move between the same 4-5 settlements which are clustered closer together. If I go towards the more isolated ones, or in areas where there are mainly fortresses, there is neither work nor trade opportunities.

I've started going into combat with injuries lately, I often have cracked ribs or something that reduces defense and attack however.

Yep, V/V. Playing on "greddydevs".

I mean, yeah, I assumed you were doing most of the sensible things, so it's tricky to figure out why your growth curve is so handicapped.

The numbers thing might be the big deal. I usually go to 8-9 picking up any of the good cheap backgrounds (brawlers, apprentices) before finishing the tutorial quest - even if one might cop it to an arrow in the face - and I'll usually hit the dozen as my first ambition after 2-3 contracts.

I don't run a big reserve like some other players, because I find it a pain, so I stick with 12 or 13-14 for a long time. But having 12 really lets you take on tougher contracts because the exponential difference in being able to maneuvre, surround people, take a hit, get in that last hit to kill them before their turn, etc. is really important. Even cheap recruits with ~50 melee skill can be given a shield and spear or mace or something to do a job for you.

Yeah, I kind of learned this from playing Deadfire on PotD with many summons. The law from Command & Conquer still holds even in a tactical turn based game - a larger number of less powerful units has a bigger combined damage output than a smaller group of elite units.

You don't have elite units at the start. So it's larger group of cheap murder hobos with clubs and pitchforks have bigger combined damage than a smaller group of cheap murder hobos with clubs and pitchforks.

I meant the enemies under elite units.

Yeah, if quality is equal on both sides, the side with the greater quantity will win.

The hounds of the Steam forums found traces that indicate that the upcoming addition will be related to roaming wildmen:

Spoiler: With the DLC, there'll be roaming bands of wildmen in the northern parts of the world.

Now THAT'S what proper noble house should look like. And there is 4 more, 18 total. All 5 other houses have 9 settlements combined. I think i found my new trade partner.

It's modded game.

I actually seen maps like that on vanilla :) After replaying and finishing the first invasion (first time i did 2), i now agree completely with Darth Roxor review. Too bad they didn't do more with the DLCs to improve the major flaws, but i guess they are working on the Sci Fi project. Good for what it is, but it gets old quite quickly. Still, i dont regret buying and playing it.

‘WARRIORS OF THE NORTH’ DLC ANNOUNCEMENT
We’re excited to announce that we’re working on another DLC for Battle Brothers. In other words, there’s going to be even more content for that game that you like. The name of the upcoming DLC is going to be ‘Warriors of the North’.

As the name suggests, the focus of the DLC will be on introducing a new human faction hailing from the north. This faction follows the old ways of raiding and sacrificing prisoners to cruel gods. They’ll bring more regional flavor to the northern parts of the map, as well as a different challenge to fighting brigands in the north at every stage of the game. This DLC will be focused on new content, and it will be smaller in scope than ‘Beasts & Exploration’. This also means that you won’t have to wait quite as long until you can play it!

Here’s the rough list of features we’re aiming for:

  • A variety of new human opponents with their own fighting style and equipment, providing a fresh challenge at every stage of the game, including the late game
  • Different origins to pick for your company, each with different starting characters, equipment and circumstances, as well as special rules that impact your campaign from beginning to end
  • New nordic and rus inspired banners, armors and helmets
  • A new legendary location
  • New contracts
  • New events
In addition to these major features, the DLC will also include countless smaller additions. Just like in the past, we’ll explain all major features and most minor ones in detail in future dev blogs as we go along, so you’ll always know what we’re working on and why. We expect to be finished within the next few months and will announce a release date and final feature list once we’re closer to the finish line.

Alongside the DLC, which will not be free, the game will also receive a sizable free update again. This update will contain a whole bunch of improvements, quality-of-life features and balancing changes, as well as some minor content additions.

Join us next week for our first dev blog on the new DLC!

Another paid DLC? And smaller this time? I dunno. I'll get it for sure, but this certainly stokes the fire of the "milking it" crowd.
