There just aren't that many RPGs on the SMS. Phantasy Star is definitely better than Miracle Warriors, which hasn't aged very well. The other good one is Ultima IV.

Edit - Shinji I've replayed both games recently. give me one aspect of Miracle Warriors that is better.

Wait, you actually added miracle warriors? I mean that is just scrapping the barrel of sms games. At least put the Ultima iv sms port option, that is actually decent.

Ultima games are cheating because those are just PC ports. When you think "Ultima", you think PC games.

Wandering the world randomly in search of maps
-Faria
-Hydlide
-Just Breed
-Ultima 3,4,5
-Bard's Tale
-Dragon Wars
-Swords and Serpents
-Dungeon Magic: Sword of the Elements

Some borderline stuff like Dragon Scroll, Getsu Fuuma Den, Magic of Scheherazade, and Esper Dream 1&2

For real though, nothing really better than the DQ and FF games.

those are just PC ports.

Maybe but the NES versions are quite a bit different they're almost new games.

I tried Swords and Serpents last month before quitting early on because M&MB1 and Wizardry are better on NES - why would you say this is worth it?

We're just listing all games here.

I played Swords and Serpents with my kid, only co-op NES dungeon crawler I'm aware of, and combat is dead simple a 3-year old could play it.

Ah okay but JRPG? If that counts then should we not be nominating Pool of Radiance?

OP is forgetting about:

- Metal Max
- Hydlide Special
- Hydlide 3
- Legacy of the Wizard
- Just Breed
- Hoshi wo Miru Hito
- Final Fantasy VII
?????

Lots of cool games there but, judging by the original list, OP meant turn based combat, single locus of control games, not ARPGs like Faxanadu or SRPGs like Fire Emblem.

Edit: Oh he added some of them. Cool, cool, although the waters are more muddied now.

Gotta add Zelda 2 and Battle for Olympus if you add Faxanadu, IMO. Even Kick Master

Also if Ys 1 and 2 are console games, then so are the other 8-bit JPC classics like War of the Dead and XZR.

I really love this era of Japanese *RPGs -- Minimal, brutal works that lay bare the actual game part of the game, for better or worse. The other parts are left to player interpretation or extra-game materials. Perfect muses for aspiring game developers, IMO.

Legacy of the Wizard ain't no JRPG. Metal Max is p.fun, though I didn't get far before I got side tracked.

Super Hydlide had the better outdoor theme:

Be nice if someone made a spiritual successor, someone should get on that.

ADD ULTIMA THREE

TOTALLY JRPGS STYLE ON NES
ACKSHULLY Ultima 3 is p.faithful to the PC format, but nes Ultima 4 is a JRPG all the way.

And for those two people who may not have known, there's a romhack for Ultima 3 that beautifies the game:

BRO YOU ARE WRITER

ULTIMA 3 WAS FAITJFUL TO PC PORT
