Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights come to mind, but I wonder if any oldschoolers here could recommend any hidden gems : D

Since this is posted in general gaming...
Heroes of Might and Magic III in hotseat.
/thread

Well, I've actually been looking for other coop shit to play with my kid.
Means I'm a touch biased towards stuff that's a bit more accessible. Still, this is a broad topic, so let me just fire away in random directions.

For shoot em ups, I liked Tyrian, but single player campaign is superior.

The Trine series is basically a modern take on Lost Vikings with a physics engine behind a good bunch of the puzzles.
It's not terribly demanding (for starters, be sure to up the difficulty if you're a functioning person), but was good fun.

I don't know about RPGs. Personally, this is something that's best enjoyed alone.

I don't know I feel like Total Warhammer: 3 kind of makes Hero's of Might and Magic 3 obsolete XD
(No offense to all the HoMM3 diehards)

I remember playing Trine 2 and finding it to be extremely generic and boring, never going to play any of those games ever again sadly.
:^(

Tyrian 2,000 sounds pretty laid back and intriguing will try giving that a go!

How retro are we talking here?
Hmmmmmm maybe 2004, right around C&C Generals.

That sort of late aughts, Golden era, designer driven games right before the big GTA/360 ctash when gaming companies started to heavily market themselves towards casuals and the Ghetto.

Had lots of fun with the Half-Life mod Sven Co Op, it's HL gameplay with lots of wacky maps/scenarios. Or at least that's how I remember it.

Swat 3. If you get tired of the co-op you can just paintball in a church. Sven Co-op is great answer also, many servers still up.

Contra Hard Cops, Streets of Rage 2.

Launch RetroArch through Steam and use Steam's Remote Play Together, a ton of great Sega games. Almost zero latency with correct configuration, google it.

Oh yeah I've done LOTS of Retroarch over the years, Secret of Mana, Wild Guns, Donkey Kong Country 2.

Hard Corps though is pretty punishing XD.

Another vote for Sven Co-op along with SWAT 4, No More Room in Hell, and Zandronum.

These are good:

So is this:

These are probably the best choices, but I never got the multiplayer to work in the Mystara one through the Remote Play option. So if you try it, you better find friends who own the game. IIRC the Beat Em Up bundle doesn't have that problem.

Sort of answered your own question there with the Generals thing. There are a lot of solid and expansive mods for Generals that are still going, although I never played any MP.

We play Operation Flashpoint and other games sometimes, if you're interested.

You can try Streets of Rage remake, it's a fan project you can download for free. Couch coop works just like in the old days, but you'd need some sort of 3rd party software to get multiplayer to work.

sven co-op for sure
WC3 is great, still has a healthy custom map scene

also not retro but dark souls series co-op is extremely underrated, it's fun af to romp through those games with some bros

GTA is a fun murder your mates game, the original, top down version. Me and my brother eventually destroyed all of the cars in our bloodfued, hard to find many after a while. Also camping the hospitals they spawn at (players freshly killed, not cars). Alien Swarm (a TC mod for UT2K4, also a standalone steam release) is pretty solid, can also get your stupid giggles out killing each other and restarting the mission after tit for tat is over. Serious Sam can be a fun co-op adventure.

Company of Heroes 2 is still going strong after 10 years and is fun in 1v1 or with buddies in co-op against other players or the AI. Sequel is out in a couple of weeks too.

coop games that are already 10+ years old (not much of retro, but yeah) I had so much fun playing with my dad, brother or friends:
Magicka - very interesting Elements mixing system, easy to understand, not that hard too master too, but it's kinda refreshing idea
Left 4 Dead - great replayability, game has great body ragdolls, shooting zombies in this game is sooo much fun, there are also custom campaigns to play!
Any Worms game!
World of Warcraft vanilla pserver (or classic) - i leveled soo many character with my dad in this game, very comfy experience, i especially love the low level experience, getting new skills, the long road from Xroad to Ashenvale coast as a Horde. Ah, good memories!
I also recall playing some custom modes/maps in Warcraft 3, but can't remember much from those times.
