I haven't made any changes, it could be an addon update or XF 2.2.x update.

The same, minus the green badge with the number inside it. The chat icon itself always remained. I’m guessing some cosmetic check like (IFF chat == enabled, THEN draw.badge) got busted.
I upgraded the chat addon.
