Last year, I played through vanilla Half-Life again, had a blast, and retried the mod version of Black Mesa. For some reason I didn't enjoy black mesa as much. There's something off about the movement, I felt slower and less agile, and I don't think this goes very well with the level design and encounters.

I'm not sure, but I also noticed less of the cool AI routines I saw in vanilla HL, like vortigaunts running after you kill some of their buddies.

They said they would never charge any money for the mod,but anyway, if I want to play the game I can always go to the original one. I just hope they don't start charging and take 5 years to deliver this shit... Too many of this already going on in the Early Access.

I might have considered paying back in 2012. But today the engine looks older than ever, the voice work in the mod was already OK to my ears (yes, even him!), and Xen is still not in the game.

Paying 20€ for multiplayer? Nope.

Even if the game had no prior release and was to be considered an indie remake instead of a mod, 20 euros is a ridiculous price for that game. I can get Far Cry 4 or another AAA FPS for that price or even half of it.

Yes. But they usually up the quality severely before doing so. When a mod wad announced to be sold for retail, it used to be both bad news for the people who liked it free and very good news for the ones who loved the game enough to pay for a substantial increase in quality and production value.

After so many years I doubt even Valve could make something that would blew of peoples minds. After the episodes cliffhanger they had still momentum and could make a slam dunk but since they have Steam they stopped caring. Their interpretation of HL was interesting, instead of 100 % copy-pasting all of the locations they made some changes. I don't remember anything horrible or out of place so I guess it worked for me. And it seems they know how to work with the engine, so it's a big plus. Making of Xen more than first person platformer would be nice. The place has a great "outworld" feeling but it was wasted, derpy boss fight was a final confirmation of that.
