When the individuals in the collection or group receive the emphasis, the plural verb is acceptable. Generally, however, in American English, collective nouns take singular verbs. In British English, collective nouns are more often treated as plurals that take plural verbs.

Seems like it's more arbitrary than what either you or I suggested. However, in this case, ChubbyCowChild was referring not explicitly to the music of SY, but rather the group of musicians - and to my ears, the use of 'is' sounds clumsy in that context, for the name is a proper noun (as opposed to something like 'the team').
It is possibly cultural as the article suggests.
