[ Update ]

Flash of Steel has word that Civilization V lead designer Jon Shafer is no longer with Firaxis.

I very much enjoyed my time Firaxis, worked on many projects that I’ve very proud of and got to know a lot of amazing people. I’m appreciative of the opportunities provided by Firaxis and 2K, and hope to see (and play) more great games from them in the future.

Let's hope this doesn't mean he's moved on to Facebook game development like some people we know.

Thanks to OSK for pointing this out.
Spotted @ Flash of Steel

Now lead designer on an unannounced project, Jon spends his free time with various combinations of browsing forums, studying Japanese, working out, and listening to music ..
No monocle?! Pfff, ok. Doesn't matter. I still think he should spend his new gained freedom right here, browsing and working out Japanese style. And someone has to get some music for him. What could possibly go wrong?

Finally some good news. I hope he will never get a job related to once good series again.

So Civ5 didn't sell as well as 2k and Firaxis expected?

Because morons think that series that always targeted non-generic strategy gamers will suddenly sell millions to consoletarded apes if you will dumb down the shit out of the game.

Going from a bad game to a worse game. Interesting career.
Makes sense to me. Improving a terrible game is a hell of a lot easier than making a new one, since at least you have a starting point of what works and what didn't work.
