Codex Opinion on Deus Ex Invisible War?

Like many of you, I loved the original Deus Ex.

How many codexers played the sequel, and was it worth playing?

Yes, this is a serious question.

It's not as terrible as the common opinion paints it but it is still a huge leap backward from the original. I'd say you won't miss much by not playing it, unless you want to see how oversimplification with multiple platforms in mind can ruin an anticipated sequel. Still it has its moments, but the problem is what comes between those.

Goatfuck, why am I replying? Use the search function, newfag!

It's pretty terrible.

Most of its shortcomings comes down to the shitty engine (tiny areas, unlike the relatively huge ones of Deus Ex). But Universal Ammo and such other shit is also bad.

Xbox fucked it. Deus Ex: Human Revolution looks like a definite incline though.

Ig you judge it on its own merits it's not bad. I certainly enjoyed playing it enough to finish it.

If you have just played Deus Ex and have high expextations you will be disappointed, though.

Piece of shit game don't listen to the apologists

The first exemple-type of a dumbed down pc-turned-console game, broke my heart at the time, I had such grand and naive expectations too!

Altho to be fair, the reason why the game came to be shit isn't entirely due to the marketing department, it seems as if they had problems with the team (in fighting and such, plus Spector kind of decided to just drop it and let the children work, so to speak, which didn't play all that well). The game has the same writer as the first, so you'd expect some kind of good story at the very least even if the mechanics are fucked up, but... I don't know, all of it felt so very wrong. I tried to give it another shot after 7 years : couldn't. Just fuck that shit.

Play the Nameless Mod instead, if you didn't play that

A good place to own a gun.
It depends on your expectations. If you want it to have that same, perfect cyberpunk feel then you'll be disappointed. If you let go of your expectations and approach it as an entirely new game, it's enjoyable. You could also replay Deus Ex with the Nameless mod + "Holy Trinity". As for the search function, it's basically unusable and everyone knows it, so I have no idea what Gragt is even talking about. Also, change your portrait newfag.

It's for Deus Ex what Oblivion is to TES and FO3 is to Fallout... although Beth games were at least 'barely playable' and I could finish MQ before brainmelting. Deus Ex Invisible War is not playable at all. AT FUCKING ALL.

Nice game (but far from great), terrible sequel.

Much smaller maps, simplified shooter mechanics (more arcade than tactical) and stats system (absent aside from implants).

There are a few improvements though. Somewhat better developed/distinct hub areas and side-quests, choices which influence late game progression (not much, but noticeable), some interesting ideas sadly not fully developed - like a weapon mod system with upgares like silent shooting through glass etc. instead of simple stat boosts in DX1, or illegal implants (which had zero game effect, but could be pretty cool if done right).

If it had been released before the original, it would have probably been considered a good game by most. When playing it though, it is impossible to not make comparisons to the original, and when you do that IW falls apart utterly.

Play The Nameless Mod if you want a good sequel to DX.

It's not a bad game, in fact it gets very good the further you go with the classic DX conspiracy vibe. The popamole interface, dumbed down shit, small levels etc. are horrifically off putting at first, but if you can get over them, you'll see that it's still far closer to DX in complexity than it is to COD in retardation.

Conversely you could be a sheep and just listen to the 'cool haters' here. They hate everything so they are worthy of respect. ;)

It's definitely very disappointing in comparison to Deus Ex, but I didn't find it unplayable. From what I recall, it at least followed up Deus Ex nicely story wise.

And I *remember* a fair amount of plot branching depending on your choices, but I might be wrong.

Too streamlined, gameplay activities reduced in number and the impact they have on the game world, an inexplicable adoption of anime/hand-drawn visual style, storytelling losing any semblance of realism even for a sci-fi game.

The biggest issue I had with Deus Ex is that it seems to use just two models for all of its characters, and two crappy models at that. JC Denton looks like a truck driver, and all the guys in the game look exactly like him, all the chicks look like Anna Navarre. Oh, and the Hong Kong section was fairly amateurish.

if you really really want to play it, i can suggest you lesser painful ways to hurt yourself, like chewing glass or drinking acid.

I've chewed glass once so just for that I can recommend playing Invisible War instead. You won't need to bring in needles and thread for that, necessarily.

However, it's not a very interesting experience, if you liked Deus Ex chances are good that you will be turned off very quickly by it, but I still think, as far as "consolization" goes, Invisible War isn't too bad. I'd say it's worth it to play it through once. Then you can come back and pick a side. Try anything once, you know.

I'm with you. It wasn't all bad. The AI had moments of greatness. If you stealth killed someone a faction member might blame the nearest person with a gun and that could start a hilarious chain reaction. Loved the multiple endings. It ended the way MotB should have.

If you can get IW for less than 10 bux, buy it. It's still a better game than most recent FPSs, and at least it's mercifully short. And the silly "coffee wars" stuff was mildly amusing.

I played IW just out of sheer curiosity to see how shitty it was. And it was shit.

Watch or read an LP of it, as that is far more entertaining than actually playing it. It's not worth ever playing. At all.

After I got over my initial disappointment I came to regard it as a pleasant enough epilogue to the original.

Try an all-biomod-drones playthrough.
