I honestly don't get the hate poured on Dark Souls 2.


I liked Bloodborne a lot, don't get me wrong, but Bloodborne brought back crap like "I'm invulnerable while opening this door and pulling this lever". That really bothered me a lot and I was thrilled when they changed it for Dark Souls 2 so that you could no longer cheese levels by running past everything and rely on being invulnerable at key moments.

I don't think teeny tiny twisty paths are great level design. I didn't think it was great in Demon Souls - and I didn't think it was great in Bloodborne. This is NOT the same thing as saying they were bad levels, they most certainly weren't.

Art wise, Bloodborne was great and atmospheric and the combat is frenetic yet still extremely tactical - which I dig.


It's a good game, but I don't get how it is better than Dark Souls 2 at all.

I only played Bloodborne for a few minutes and watched a friend play it for a few hours (cuz he's an asshole who never lets me play) and I didn't really like it at all. My biggest complaint is the art direction - the focus has been lost, I loved the gothic atmosphere of DS. It's actually one of the main reasons I played it, there's no game like that. Bloodborne is cluttered with useless junk everywhere which constitutes "attention to detail" for the plebs but for me it's a distraction because 450 grey boxes does not atmosphere make. Everything is grey, the blood everywhere is cartoony, grey, gooey... Everything is so overdone, typical Japan. Everybody is over-dressed. The environment is unmemorable despite having so much meaningless detail.

They had such a huge opportunity to tap into this wealthy lore and do it right. Start of with the small stuff, you know? In Dark Souls 1, you don't start by fighting some grotesque monster with 30 tentacles covered in blood. You start by killing a few zombies in a strange, majestic and sad looking castle. It's a castle, you know, what you imagine as a castle, everything is right. In Bloodborne, you start in a city with no identity, just a bunch of shit everywhere.

I hope they change the design up this time. One of the things that killed DS2 for me was the familiarity of everything, with only minor changes from DS1. Demon's and Dark Souls felt mysterious and confusing. There was a lot of potential for surprises even later in the games. DS2 felt like I had already been there, done that, and I basically knew the whole scope of the game after the first few hours.

Exactly. It was just like going from one quest to the next. Little interconnection between areas.
