The closest experience to the original Dark Souls I found outside of FromSoft titles is Bleak Faith: Forsaken, a game made by three Balkaners. Mega janky, as expected from small team balkanware, but intensely atmospheric and focused on exploration of a massive and interconnected world. Very unique game. Quite enjoying that one.

The best game I discovered last year was a solo dev 2D soulslike called Fire in the Beastlands. Very interconnected map, quite open exploration, and a secret good ending I missed (you gotta do secret things to get it, I missed a bunch of stuff and got a letdown ending). Cool tribal stone age setting. Extremely well-made and full of soul.

These games alone justify the existence of soulslike as a genre.

Agree 100% with this, loved the exploration of Bleak Faith, atmosphere and architecture were fantastic, gave me real DS1 vibes as well. Had a look at Fire in the Beastlands on Steam, looks interesting.

To be fair, this thread isn't really about the first DS. It's about all the derivative shit that came afterwards. Fromsoft or otherwise.

The entire 'Soulslike' sub-genre is probably the most derived from formula in the industry right now. And it's not because it's actually good - it's because consumers have proven they're quite content to consume the same thing over and over again.

Like H. P. Lovecraft's Cat over there, who loves Leon Kennedy so much he's quite happy if every new RE game from here on out features him as main protagonist in 3rd person mode.
