Dead or Alive 5: Last Round (on X1/PS4 preferably)

Gameplay-wise, no real need to play the previous ones outside of curiosity. There's DOA: Dimensions on 3DS if one wants to play a title that covers the story of 1-4.

What Seboist said. DOA2 holds a special place in my heart, but DOA5LR is pretty much the definitive version in my book.

Oh I'll probably get Dimensions maybe also then.

The main thing is I don't have a PS4/X1 yet, is the gap with the PS3 or PC versions (if they exist?) such that it's a dramatic difference?

There's a PS3 version, but it lacks the new stages, new characters(Honoka and Raidou) and graphical effects that Last Round added in the X1/PS4 version(nor is it in 1080p and 60fps). Plus, it lacks four DLC characters from the previous revision that come standard with LR. It's a title update to "Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate" (the first and previous revision) that mainly just adds the balancing updates from LR. I suppose if you never played vanilla or ultimate, and don't have X1/PS4, getting Ultimate and dling the (free) title update/balance path isn't a bad deal, since it should be real cheap now.

There's a PC version, which is a frankenstein port that happens to be as good, worse and better than the X1/PS4 version. It lacks the new stages and effects, but has all the characters, has AA unlike the consoles, but the biggest issue, is how online wasn't added until MONTHS later, so definitely not recommended if you want a healthy online population to fight against.

Oh, and the costume DLC for the PC version is ridiculously expensive, due to not being able to individually purchase costumes, for whatever bizarre reason.

Ok, well that sounds like to be expected for the most part.

The Dimensions thing actually sounds pretty cool to me because of not being super familiar with the franchise can just kind of get an understanding, and then it could help enhance apprecation LR which I can hopefully come up with a solid plan for at some point.

The PC version is kinda like a last bet to me because it's just fighters on PC megghh.
