That recent gameplay video sealed the deal for me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fj4fGbul1M

Wow that health regen was fast.
The enemies better be ruthless hunters. Or there will be zero challenge.

I seem to recall an interview stating that health regen was much more subdued then other popamoles and that going from nothing back to 100% was supposed to take a long while (30s or so). Was that just pure bullshit or is it a difficulty level thing?

It's fairly common for demonstrations to use godmode or maxed abilities in order to show off a series of constant special abilities that would ordinarily require stopping to heal or rest, or that would overly tax the mana/energy/mcguffin reserves in normal play, or even just to keep the demo moving quickly (so the demonstrator can run through as much content as possible, with 'content' meaning 'levels, enemies and things exploding', because that's what 'professional gaming journalists' are going to be looking at.

I'm not saying that's the case with this video. It's a possibility. It's also common practice for the games themselves to be pseudo-perpetual-godmode, with mcguffin/energy reserves so high that you don't need to tactically plan its usage and every move being a 'take-the-game-out-of-the-player's-control' cinematic. So that's also a possibility.

Some clarification would be nice, otherwise I'm withholding judgment. Though, I have to say - I personally couldn't care less about most of the stuff people are complaining about, not with Deus Ex. The original was as easy as they come, even on nightmare. Thing is, I've seen nothing that would make me think that this reboot (and I'm looking at it as a reboot utilising the Deus Ex concept, rather than something that I'm expecting to stay true to the original, in terms of lore anyway) matches the original. Deus Ex was brilliant because of its map design (primarily). All non-cosmetic choice in the game came from the open maps with superb details that rewarded exploration, and multiple paths that allowed emergent gameplay.

I can't actually think of any game that succeeds at that style of map design, and in particular that amount of emergent gameplay that wasn't predicted by the developers, that wasn't made by Warren Spector. Spector summed up Deus Ex's success perfectly when he said that the aspect he was most proud of was that he can watch a video of a player going through one of the maps, and see the player progress using tactics and paths that the development team didn't even know were there. That is, for all the shitty AI, he managed to make a game that allows the player to progress through using his creativity and choice, rather than his ability to work out what path the developers intended.

The interviews with the new developers have been promising in some ways, but I haven't read any mention of emergent gameplay - it's almost like once Spector left the PC gaming industry, everyone forgot that emergent gameplay was possible, or even desirable, and it's been purged from collective memory, even in the reboots of IPs that were based around the concept.

So I'm still at nil-nil insofar as this one goes. I'll forgive a lot, and I'm not expecting 'Deus Ex: Spector returnes to PC gaming after removing the long undetected brainslug', and I'm certainly expecting something consolised. But there's simply no reason to get excited unless they release a video (or better, a demo) that shows a massive multi-pathed map, and mechanics designed to encourage emergent gameplay.

This looks truly terrible. Narrow corridors, walking like on rails, highlighted ladders(?), kill animations!? This looks more like a standard console sneaker shooter of the recent years with a Deus Ex branding slapped on to it. It reminds me more of a Splinter Cell than Deus Ex. "How creative can you be while playing our game?" Funny. Just how uncreative can they be and how many of the same games can they try to sell? It seems that I will NOT be buying this turd.

----

console trash.

----

From InGamers:

"Jean Francois Dugas: It is really important to us to respect the core values that made the original game outstanding, but we also know that we need to bring new ideas to the table that will elevate the experience for old fans, while adding new levels of excitement and surprise that will draw newcomers into the Deus Ex world. "

Right... Highlighting ladders will surely elevate the experience for me.

----

this is how they will stop piracy: by making games too shitty to even be worth stealing

----

I really don't understand game developers and designers today. I mean cmon! Look at the very first kill animation in the game ..... It just screams OVERKILL. I am some highly trained super augmented professional agent who kills "Dragon Age cover me in a blood" style?!?!? I almost vomited .... I am 38 year old player who is playing games since packman ... and this is revolting to me. I am not sure even kids will like it (and this is sure geared towards them in spite "mature" approach...). :(

----

More of the same ol tired same crap. Sure it looks good but home many games have to take the same approach to combat? There are a million games out there where, the character walks around the corner and the enemies back is ALWAYS TO THE character. I mean, c'mon. These game companies are scared to give players an open ended world. One, most of them do not have the talent to get the AI right. This is more force fed linear average console crap

----

@MrGhaxaal I totally agree, it's a clone of a clone of a clone. Gamers are getting sick of this crap. Warning to other game companies, please don't continue to give us the same old tired crap. I wouldn't even buy this for $20 dollars. Parents, don't you dare shell out $70 dollars with tax from this crap. Wait and get it used off eBay 6 months from now for $35 dollars shipped.

Critical comments to a AAA console turd in the comment section of youtube? Did I just read some kind of bizzaro alternate universe version of that website?

Here's what I'll say: This game is slow. But not in a bad way. Really it just requires more thought, especially early on when ammo is at premium and you don't have very many powers at your disposal. Watch the video at the top of this post and you'll get a sense of the pacing. That section they're showing off? I died about six times. Three guys with pistols in "Human Revolution" can leave you dead real quick, so you really have to use the environment effectively. I didn't.

I had picked a tranquilizer rifle at the beginning of the mission, but the guards kept waking up their buddies when I knocked them out. My plan to attempt the mission without any causalities (something you can do for the entire game, save for the boss fights) was down the tubes at the first encounter, as I ran out of ammo, melee'd a guy to death, stole his pistol and exploded a nearby gas can. So much for my Nobel prize.

The rest of the mission slowly taught me the right way to play this game: Be patient, be thoughtful, look at your surroundings. At almost every encounter, I would notice two or three different ways to handle it (usually right after I had done it the most clumsy way possible). Stealth is always an option, but why not hack a turret against the guards instead? Out of ammo? Hurl a heavy box at someone's head to knock them out.
This previewis interesting because he's apparently talking about playing that tiny section presented in that recent "multiple path" video. Is the writer of this piece a huge liar, is he so incredibly incompetent at playing the game, or have the developers really done such a poor job at showing that level off?

Like any good "Deus Ex" game, "Human Revolution" gives you options.
