just go on and have a look how many people are playing in public games and compare this to the numbers sold. Also didn't they publish some raw data lately where vast majority of new characters never made it past act 1?

It's D3 Account Hardcore mode. If you get partied with a hacker you lose your account permanently. Much more fun to play that way.
