When looking at mechanics that typically go into CRPGs, it's pretty hard to reverse-engineer a plan of intent. The conclusion I'm usually left with is that they wanted the system to "look like an RPG" on a UI screen. They have classes and stats and skills and skill/talent trees and a ton of derived stats when probably not all of that is necessary.

Same old crpg designer fail.

Interesting. There's a FOV, sight and hearing stat. Might the enemy use stealth against the pc's?

Keep in mind Roguey that JES has implied that he doesn't oppose "simulationism" in a classless system, which D:OS is.

What he'd really say is "looks overwrought, but let me play the game first and see the content and then I'll decide".

So then you are Josh, or you think that you know what Josh thinks or likes. If the first one does not apply then, you are guessing or wishing, and then it is not reasonably. And certainly not fair to Josh, to lay words in his mouth. If he wants to speak let him speak not you, give him at least this honor. Because you are doing him not a favor, quite the opposite you abuse his name and his quotes, taken out of context.

Keep in mind that this is still all pre-alpha, so there's plenty of time for it to possibly be pared down once they see what people say about it. I will admit that four whole pages of stats (with scroll bars too!) is a bit intimidating, but most of them seem to be fairly obvious. Charm and Charisma are somewhat confusing at first glance, though. But tooltips and manuals can help.

I suspect that if the stats pages looked simple, Roguey would be complaining about how "dumbed down" it is.

yeah good points. Roguey is only good for obscure quotes and sources of Josh (and to a lesser extent Obsidian). there is a reason he is the user ignored most (after hiver). In some megathread, Roguey said he obviously has to enjoy the game to some degree to play it to completion (cant recall where/ no cyber stalker skills on my part). when someone asked why he plays non Josh games to completion.

Also, IIRC, Roguey backed D:OS and one of incxiles KDS ( cant rememebr Wl2 or TToN) and increased hsi pledge once.

So take that for what you will.

I think after seeing some post from Roguey that he/she/it is smart, has a certain finess, and it seems that Roguey keeps a certain distance, even if he/she/it attacks (all the time) something. That means that in a way ( based on the posts that i have seen ) i could like Roguey, but ...
The obsession with JES is not good, and Roguey has his/her/its own personality and character with his/her/its own preferences. I respect JES, for what he is (seems to be), therefore i will criticise Roguey, for his/her/its abuse of JES name and use of quotes out of context.
But i also don't think that Roguey is that of kind negative character and that he/she/it has much potential that could be used in a better way.
I have backed (some as late backer) all the games WL2, PE, T:ToN, D:OS, each of them for his own reason. WL2 because i am a post apocaliptic fan (since i watched Mad Max 2 with 10 or 11 or so). PE because i liked games like Baldurs Gate and etc. T:ToN because i love the extraordinary fantasy/sci-fi and PT and it will be great in this aspects. But D:OS was a positive surprise for me, it looks very good in every way and it seems to be pure fun.

Looks good, all great cRPG's must be judged firstly based on their chargen screen, if I load up an cRPG and create a character, and don't see a good amount of attributes/skills/etc, I will quit it. The player must be given lots of choices right from the beginning, otherwise it's not a proper cRPG. Same reason I quit Dragon Age before starting the game.

Given enough experience with RPGs, one can judge them by looking. For example, Josh wouldn't need to play any 3rd edition D&D to know it's bad. See the third quote in my sig.

What does body building do that strength and constitution do not? Is it the OS equivalent of Wasteland 2's brute force? It looks like they've divorced skills from attributes even more than W2 considering it looks like attributes don't even affect starting values.

charm vs. charisma, which is better and why, discuss?

I think this is something like persuasion and seduction in Bloodlines.
That would be Reason. And with leadership being what affects your teammate's performance in combat and barter affecting prices, who the hell knows what charisma does. What a mess.

Way to change the subject. It could be possible to make a mechanically bad character even in a system with only three stats and no skills.

As to your original point:
D&D comes with sourcebooks that give you an idea of what content a game can have even before you've actually played. The same isn't true for computer games.

First one is then based on a opinion, and that would not speak for Josh. But the quote that you use in your sig, says the otherwise, he has the books even that he did not pay for them and he did play this so he could build up his own opinion.
Second one is a assumption out of lack of knowledge, we don't know what Bodybuiling (in D:OS) is not how it works. To have strength and know how to use it are two different things, i know it because, to my martial arts training i do train my strength with weights.

I think that is very good, else the system would be for dummies. You could do nothing wrong and fail. I think that i learn the most out of a situation if i fail. Naturally it is always better to learn from somebody else's mistakes.
And i also have the opinion that it is useless and for me without fun, to play a game that one cannot fail. I like to grow, to become better, to learn something and not to repeat tasks where i am good at only for the sake to prove that i am good.

Not if it's done and presented well.

I've played enough crpgs to have a good idea about what the content will be like.
