Cutscenes tend to make up a large portion of any modern game. Especially with a "dialouge heavy" game like this. You'll end up watching movies scenes half of the time.

"I DO like the length thing - part of what elevated BG2 was the sheer amount of content, which gave a decent illusion of freedom even though the main plot was linear. But that content has to be thematically correct and interesting - Oblivion and FO3 have lots of content, but to their detriiment."

Meh. Of course, morons (including BIO) claimed that BG2 was 200+ hours which is complete and utter bullshit.

"Weird. Most folk say they can't enjoy/judge their own games (or any art/entertainment product) until years later, as they are too close to the product, too emotionally involved in it, and too self-critical. Bioware hasn't released it yet, and they're going on as though they are a reliable and unbiased critic."

"But who the hell claims to be a good judge of their own work?"

You are fuckin' dumb. EVERYBODY judges their own work. EVERYBODY. You don't think, say, a singer judges their own work? That's why they practice - to fix what's what is wrong and become better.

He has his own opinion. he thinks the game is awesome. Nothing wrong with that FFS. I guess you'd prefer he claim the game sucks like shit, and release it anyways? Your logic is pathetic.

But, hey, perhaps when your favorite singer releases their next album I hope it sucks and I hope that singer *knows* it sucks and releases it anyways.

You. are. L A M E

Oh everyone judges their own work alright. I never said people didn't do that (reading comprehension ftl). I said most designers/artists don't claim to be a GOOD judge of their own work. As in, sure they judge it, but they aren't stupid enough to say that other people should go by their opinion.

Which is why actors, directors and writers often talk about whether enough time has passed since a particular work for them to look at it objectively. Of course they judged it before - they have to in order to decide to release it. But they aren't pretending that they can do so objectively.

BioWare says a game is long (120 hours). Huge outrage from the Codex as it must suck and be padded!

BioWare says a game is going to be short (40 hours). Huge outrage from the Codex as it is too short!

BioWare says a game is going to be medium length (60 hours). Huge outrage from the codex because obviously it was padded to get it to that length.

Total time spent on a game is the most important thing. If I play a 40 hour game 5 times then I chock it up to 200 hours of enjoyment thus it's a better value than the 100 hour game I played once.

SOME artists don't, and I can tell that for a fact. A friend of mine plays in a rock band here in Portugal and I'm friends with them and whatever, and they simply play whatever they feel like, record it in an album and sell it. The music is pretty inconsistent, if you ask me, but they play it because they like it, and they do.

Yeah, 200 hrs in Oblivion is easy to do.

Do everything-- all quests, all factions, all dungeons, and no fast travel-- and you'll get more than that.

120 hours out of a Bioware rail ride, though? Or multiple rail-rildes?

My guess is that we will be very lucky to see even half of that in Dragon Age; it might be two Mass Effects long-- but four?

What bothers me most is that the more screenshots I see is that the game is ugly. Not so much that it's aged, but that it's just plain ugly. I've been obsessed with Mount and blade recently. That game has graphics arguably out of date. But it's not ugly.

DA, however, is aggressively ugly. The aesthetic was once BG/Old-Shcool DnD; now, however, I have no idea what it's supposed to look like-- that is, besides perhaps unintentionally appearing to be the product of WoW and Final Fantasy having double-teamed NWN1 in a dark alley.

Yes, if you call repetitive, boring, mindless dungeons with level-scaled enemies and treasure to be "content", I suppose Oblivion has tons of that.

Well, that's not part of the argument. Of course out of these 200 hours about 5 is actually interesting.

But it can be done, so I fail to see why everyone's calling out a lie.

120 fun-packed hours in the vein the planet exploration missions in Bio's last epos, Mass Effect. Boy, I hope achievements are in the PC version.

I take all the games seriously. I want a hands-on experience on all the platforms. You know, to varying degrees: sometimes I’ll focus on one platform more than the other, but I love the games we make. I really have a passion for them. To me, it’s work but it’s also a lot of fun too. I can describe the areas in Dragon Age, and it’s not because I’ve seen them from afar, it’s because I was there. I went there, and I fought this creature, and I had the best party ever. I just love games.

He's trying too hard...

Also:

... I had the best party EVAR...

I mean what is this? Guys like him are managing budget of millions? We are all doomed and the world is going to end soon.

(Also Earth will be destroyed by a giant cockroach from within its core)....

Bullshit, they claimed the *exact* same for NWN 1:

RM: The overall scope of Neverwinter is probably the most challenging aspect of [developing] the game--there is just so much content there, and so many features. All told, we have put about 160 man-years of development work into the game. Playing the single-player game through from start to finish takes about 140 hours or more if you try to do everything (that's how long it took me, in any event). The four pillars of the game--single-player, multiplayer, the module creation toolset, and the dungeon master tools--all represent significant challenges in their own right.

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/neverwin ... e=previews

If you play every single day 3 hour sessions, it would take you 46 days to finish the game. And that's without reloading, restarting etc. If you play the game 2 hours every single day, that probably many gamers won't do, it takes *70* to slog through the game, that's more than 2 months. If you're basement dweller and play the game for 6 hours every day, it would still take 23 days to finish it.

It's just typical marketing exaggeration; it's not going to take that long to finish the game.

"but they play it because they like it,"

If they 'like' it they are judging it.

Well that's how long I felt it took for me anyways (and I only went until chapter 3 or something).

It is pretty easy in the Bethesda model. Just make the map a little bit bigger. They can randomly create the terrain and suddenly they got 100 hours more of "content". Moreso if they would take away the map teleportation.

Just imagine how many hours Arcanum is if you don't use the map and instead run between the cities. Imagine!

Accurate predictions, no doubt, that no matter what BioWare produces, it always sucks.

When was the last time BioWare even produced a long or medium length game? Nearly a decade ago? Mass Effect I beat in roughly 35 hours and the majority of that was padded crap. KotOR 1 was (from what I remember) about 25 hours. Jade Empire was extremely short -- lasting only 20 hours. Never bothered with NWN, so I can't say how long its OC was.

It felt to me that the NWN OC lasted an eternity but that's because it was extremely boring.
