Wut? France, GB and Spain did a better job with this, for a lot more time, and against more worthy enemies.

I always find discussions about "clichè" story elements inredibly stupid. If you break down stories far enough almost everything has been used before. The point is not solely about originality which is nigh impossible to accomplsh but about presentation.

1) to be fair, there is a difference 'tween cliche and archetype. just 'cause basic formula is utilized it not mean something is cliche. cliche is a bit overused... likelihood of seeing "cliche" label increases if a person not like the story.

2) too often people confuse plot with story. plot is an element o' story, and simply 'cause a plot is similar to previous story plots not necessarily mean that a story is unoriginal.

3) as for the hyperbole 'bout no new/original stories... that is true IF peoples is trying to hard to prove a point.

a protagonist must journey to overcome various obstacles both tangible and emotional to get what he/she wants, eventually arriving at some ultimate confrontation with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. success or failure in overcoming final obstacle will determine future good or ill for the protagonist and possibly others as well.

99.9% of all plots is following the above approach... but such a reduction is meaningless. as you note already, the skill and manner in which this basic structure is dressed up and presented is far more important than is perceived originality of the structure itself.

HA! Good Fun!

Neither of those countries were superpowers. More worthy foes? USA is and has been the most powerful empire the world has seen. You can't go more worthy than that.

I didn't really read this, but did someone in this thread write "Stalin wasn't evil" or something to that extent?

Hello? That guy had more people put to death than Hitler. Gee, some people. What more do you have to do to be evil? Bathe in the blood of virgins?

I wrote about this already. Russia was in state of chaos because it suffered terrible defeat from Japane and WW 1. Aside from these 2 major wars, there occurred a revolution during which every country from Europe invaded Russia. The country was in a state of complete anarchy when the aggressive nazis took power, proclaimed some of historical Russian territories theirs and the Slavs untermensches. Another great war was imminent. Stalin, being a pretty darn smart individual having carved his way from the bottom to the top, saw the only possible course of action: rapid industrialization of the backwater country and mass murdering or caging up everyone who is in the way. Unfortunately, Russia was filled with foreign agents, nazi collaborators and simple russophobes , who had to be quickly cleaned up in order to continue the rapid modernization. Just like Germany funded Lenin, so did foreign power fund their own people who were tasked to sabotage workings(something which is actually recorded).

The result was that uneducated peasants got free degrees, lives in cities with all of the comforts and a victory of the greatest war on Earth against a seemingly impossible opponent.

You're probably a pretty smart guy, Jasede. How do you expect an apparent madman who murders people for the lulz to stay in power for decades? He would be assassinated in less than a year if he wouldn't be doing an OK job. Don't you think that mustache twirling, evil and mad Stalin is nothing more than propaganda?

I am at loss. Do you really believe this or are you, like Keldorn, "forum roleplaying" and posting things you don't really believe in to elicit a humorous or at least annoyed response?

Don't you think, mr. Gaider, that Bioware games are a little bit too cheesy and something must be changed?
Nope.

I like saving the world.

But, gee... it's just a shot in the dark here, but I'm guessing you don't?

Hey, I like saving the world as much as the next guy or gal. It is when you have it for the nth time, it really gets to you. Then it hangs you out of the troth - as we say in Danish. (don't know what the English idiom is but it means that you're really really bored with it and want to try something new...)

As I understand, bith Mass Effect and the Sonic game from Bioware is about a dark and sinister evil who has slept for a long time and threatens to destroy the world (as we know it). And you, our brave hero(es) are the only one that can save us all. It does get tiresome after a while, you know....

I just keep coming back to what David Gaider (or Mr. Gaider?) has said on the DA: Origens forums. You're not the here pr se in this game, it is more like a stroke of chance or fate that puts you into this -ehm- destiny or life's path. [It may wll be that I remember some of this info wrongly; it could have changed, too, of course...].

Who knows, russians voted Stalin as the greatest person in the Russia's history. Plus all that propaganda about how Stalin brought order and created a great empire in their mass media etc.
So I won't be surprised if a person like TWD actually believes what he says.

Lolwut. Stalin is not a popular figure in today's media and anything about him is not exactly positive. Please don't lie that the media is throwing praise about Stalin. Most Russians, from what I've seen, believe the exact same bullshit as the rest of the world does. I have also never heard Russians voting Stalin as the greatest figure. The approval rating was half, the last time I've seen news regarding this. Even if such a vote did take place, it was most assuredly meant as most *influential* person, as in Hitler being on the cover of Times.

Unlike Europeans and Americans, I have observed facts from both sides, plus read material by independent parties. What I'm saying is merely my own deductions based on logic. Whatever so far I've written is far more plausible than the childish, ignorant view on Stalin the majority of people seem to possess.

As usual, skyway is full of shit regarding Russia. You blatantly lie to try to win arguments. You're just a butthurt Ukrainian being all angry because of history, admit it.

There was a poll called "The Name of Russia" where russians vote for the most important name in Russia's history

The top3 was:
1. Stalin
2. Visotsky
3. Lenin

It was today in the russian news.

Happens all the time. It's called being a dictator. It's called being king. It's called being ruler.

In your nightmare.
No politics on these boards, please.

No, rly, Stalin and communism can't be something positive no matter how much you stretch things. The consequences are what counts - not the supposed "ideas" and "intentions".
I haven't microanalysed it though, but I think the macro facts are quite enough to judge the topic in question.
Yes, history books can lie.. a bit.. but not that much, hopefully.

Anyway, rejoice people.... the Dragon Stage trailer is coming in a few hours!

The only consequence was that USSR defeated Germany and escaped being enslaved and murdered through the nazi ideal. GB and France were victorious and democratic, yet they failed to withstand the war machine of Germany. Quick elimination of any obstacles had to be made in order overcome the damage the history has dealt. Imagine if there wouldn't be a Stalin and Russia would either be democratic or semi democratic monarchy or menshevik government. GB and France, despite being victorious, simply could not match the dictators and focus all of their attention on the military, and that's why they failed and lost their leading positions. Russia, having lost WW 1 and being considerably poorer, would have been destroyed utterly.

I'm done debating. The only responses I'm getting are the propaganda infused "but Stalin was evil!" You still cling to the false history books where Stalin was said to have killed millions without a reason being given.

Whether a person is "evil" is just a viewpoint their enemies have. I doubt Stalin just woke up every morning and said to himself "Hmmm, I wonder how bad can I be today?"

He had his reasons for doing what he did and obviously felt they were the right things to do for the country, thus he didn't see his actions as evil.

You say that but a thousand years later a future civilization will call us evil for not murdering our loved ones so that they could go to heaven quicker.

I'll be dead, and I won't care what they think of me. Just like I doubt Stalin or Hitler care.

Hell, I barely care what people alive now think of me.

He removed people from history and even old paintings. If that depth of removal isn't done by some mental disorder/insanity, I don't know what is.
Basically, your pathetic view on Stalin and Russia boils down to this: Stalin was evil and stupid and murdered anyone who stepped on his toes for no obvious reason.
My view on Stalin boils down to he murdered anyone who was in his way...because they were in his way. He didn't want to be disposed, he was probably a paranoid schizophrenic, and began thinking everyone was against him.

And Russia just sucks in general, that's my view of that. The only time that there's ever been a nuclear accident in the world, and who does it? The fucking Russians. How stupid can you be.

Maybe Fritzl's daughter was asking for it? Ever think of that?

A discussion about Stalin's role in World War II... In a thread about Dragon Age?

What's next... Nazi apologetics in the Age of Decadence?

Decline of the Codex indeed.
