I just finished playing EVN for a few hours. I'm loving it. I need some help though.

I keep getting robbed by Pirates, is there any effective countermeasure except from running for it? Any equipment/upgrades that I can use? They really are starting to annoy me, they've stolen about 100,000 credits

Pirates? Just get them before they get you. Accumulate money, get a better ship, and start disabling and boarding them.

Or zip past them.

It's very possible to just jump-jump-jump-jump, as long as you have a decent cargo ship.

Behind you.
Pirates will only pick on things they think they can beat easily. If you have a decent ship, they won't go hostile when they see you. You can also target a pirate when it goes hostile, hit Y and bribe them in to not attacking you.

Early in the game, I'd stick with areas long the East-West run from Sol.. Head North, you'll have pirates, even in Kania. If you stick around the southern parts of Federation space, you probably won't even see a pirate.

It's 78 megabytes. Sure, the Ambrosia FTP site is a little sluggish, but it doesn't exactly take "god damn LONG to download" unless your Ritalin is wearing off.

Suggestion: Start the Federation campaign and get the Unrelenting. Then fly to S7Evyn or Mu'ar Haro and purchase a multi-jump organ. The game gets a lot easier after that point.

Oh man, I remember how much trouble I had at the beginning until I figured out that I had to equip that ring. Good times.

VD mentioned this game in his interview. Well, so, has anyone played it? I never heard of it before. How is it?

You mean Escape Velocity Nova?

It's kinda cool, but never really grew on me. The concept is familiar to anyone who has ever played a space trader. You fly from system to system, killing, trading, mining, upgrading your ship, taking on missions, etc. All from a top down perspective, so the flight model is basically Asteroids elaborated.

I found I never really enjoyed the game activities. The combat felt limited by the viewport, mining/trading were just timesinks and when I played I just didn't really have the desire to go through treadmilling for a better ship.

I guess it's pretty good for what it is, just not my bag.

Huh. How does it compare to Privateer? I mean the MS DOS game, in its pure, unmodified MS DOS state, though with the add-on.

But, uh, top-down perspective? Uh...

Anyway, it's a very cool game, so give it a shot.

From an old thread:

Spazmo: It incredible. EVN is the first game ever to make me take notes. I've been carefully cataloguing what different planets have to buy and sell all day looking for good trade routes. I wouldn't be surprised if I reproduce a great big starmap on my wall.

Psilon: Well, I registered last Sunday and have been playing religiously since then. Before the Wild Geese sent me into the Pirate storyline (with the commensurate capital ship and upgrades--you know what I'm talking about) I had a very nice Pirate Starbridge with several railguns and fusion cannons. Rather than do trade runs I just ran missions for folks; United Shipping frequently sent me 50000 credit and even 100K delivery runs!

The thing I'm flying now is a brick (despite all three engine upgrades--you guys left out the Overdrive), but it's a brick with turrets! And two sets of marines! Before doing the final Pirate lets-get-our-asses-kicked mission I had several stolen Valkyries and Starbridges for escorts, as well as four docked Pirate Thunderheads and an Abomination. Afterwards I still had two fighters, a Pirate Valkyrie, and the Abomination. Even though I disabled several Manticores, Thunderheads, and an Enterprise, I couldn't board them. I assume one can't board any plot-induced enemy ships?

Notes on what systems like what goods would be nice, but I'll tell you what would be nicer: an ignore target button a la TIE Fighter which works for all friendly ships, even those not technically your escorts. The mission where you and a bunch of friendly pirates spring an ambush drove me up the wall. It took at least sixty tries before I managed to keep the command Enterprise intact and board it without my "allies," the Feds, the Rebels, or even the bloody Aurorans blowing it up. That's why I like hanging out in neutral systems such as those adjacent to Koria; there's not much traffic and the governments rarely interfere with one's pirate-hijacking operations.

Role-Player: Just the other day as i kept advancing in the Vell Os arc i got this absolutely wicked mission, to drive 4 Destroyers to the Courageous docking station, and cause enough destruction. So i had a VO Dart, and was walking around directing 4 huge ships... eheh. Kinda makes you feel important out there 8)

Upon reaching the system, to my amazement i'm overwhelmed with a heavilly armed welcoming comitee. There must've been about 4 destroyers or cruisers and about fifteen smaller combat ships. I got owned about 20 times before managing to win the situation by using the afterburner to draw enemy fire, then letting my 4 destroyers handle the fight (and also had them launch their own smaller combat ships), coupled with about other 4 to 5 escorts - by the time i had drawed enough enemy fire i sprinted back an immediatelly entered the station, caused mayhem, and ran away.

Mission successful.

Saint: Polaris is damned nice.. I have a Zephyr in my sixth game now, which is about the size of a Starbridge, right? I just took down two pirate capital ships - a Pirate Starbridge and a Manticore. That's without assistance from hired people or a fleet, all by myself! And I can CLOAK!

I actually managed to capture the starbridge, but I kinda destroyed the manticore.. whoops. I doubt I could have captured it anyway. Very Happy

I went by the Rebel II port and picked up some marines though, I want to capture more pirate ships. I'm mainly picking on the pirates because in joining Polaris, you kind of have to piss off the Freds. Killing pirates makes the Freds happy.

Anyway, I just snagged myself a Pirate Enterprise to go with my Pirate Starbridge.. w00t! I would have had another Pirate Starbridge as well, but a Pirate Fleet was coming and I didn't want them taking out my new Pirate Enterprise which was pretty shot up when I disabled it.

Hah! Try Tyrian 2000, it has some extra features. It's a nice change from all those 1-hit = dead bullet hell shooters I am trying to master.

The best of all - it's still Tyrian. :D

The only problem with Tyrian is that maxed laser and good rest of equipment basically turn you into unstoppable avalanche of death that rolls through the levels leaving barely anything standing or flying. Additionally, laser has obscenely low energy consumption compared to, for example lightning cannon.

Speaking of Tyrian, I just found this today. Might be handy if you have trouble getting Tyrian to work under XP or want to run it on Linux/Mac/whatever.

T2000 runs just fine under XP, it's setting up sound that causes problems.

I might look into it, so far I've been using DOSBox to satisfy my craving for the-mother-of-all vertical scrollers.

I wish they would have gone turn-based with EVN, at least for the battles. It's the only reason why I don't play it anymore, even though I was really addicted for a while.

Well, I've played and liked EVN... however, one 'but':
There are indeed six story arcs (hence, it can be touted as ultimately nonlinear game), yet, if one I've choosen for my playthough is of any indication, THEY SUCK.
I mean, it's 'fanfic made by 16-year old' level. Epic fail at trying to be epic, heh. And that was quite some time ago, when my standarts were lower.
And world is NOT reactive, hence you can plot your ultimate trading route and rake in the dough. Lame.
I'd recommend Space Rangers instead... but if you already played it to death - it's still good one.

Heyas,

Just following up someone's post in the thread 'non-linearity in RPGS, where the poster gave Escape Velocity nova kudos for having 6 interlocking storylines. I wiki'd it and it looks kind of interesting - also 2002 release so graphics should be fine (for some reason that is more important to me for a space-rpg than other kinds), but on the various pages around the web, and the wiki itself, there are a few criticisms about it being less strategically deep and less interesting in some ways than the earlier games: escape velocity and escape velocity override.

So, anyone else tried these games? Are they worth getting? If so, which one should I get?
