Borg.
However, send one of the guys that did not participate in the mugging, which means Borg or Muller. Just a precaution.

Also, one thing about breaking in at night... This guy is a hacker, his sleeping patterns are not likely to be standard-fair. He could very well be up at 4 am in the morning.

Agh, there's flaws with every option. If this guy had a career which did not involve working from home, this would be much easier.

I agree with Smashing Axe about him potentially not going out much. We can't sit in this van forever so we'll probably have to set a time limit, if he doesn't exit then try the break-in at night.

Trying to convince him to let us in seems a bad idea, he's involved in illicit activities and this will just put his guard up.

I think so too, but it's still probably our best chance. At least, his neighbors will be slow to react.

Also, I vote for taking Muller with us. If Borg dislikes committing a simple theft, I don't think he's a good choice for breaking into an appartment and abducting an unarmed and scared man.

Let's get in there fast, knowing most hackers he'll be watching porn holograms in his underwear, grab him and his computer and we'll be gone before the nosy grandmother living next door even has time to find her spectacles.

Codex 2012 Codex 2013 MCA Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Divinity: Original Sin 2 My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
Here I come with another diatribe:P :

First some questions/needed clarifications from Hellraiser : What languages can the people in our team speak? Is anybody speaking Spanish? Is anybody capable of speaking Spanish without a foreign accent? Is it common for foreigners not speaking Spanish to call at your door or is that going to instantly raise a red flag?

I would prefer not to raise a ruckus in such a confined space, otherwise the neighbors will call the police and we'll have the heat on our tails. Can Westgard punch in/break a lock using her bionic arms without making too much noise? If she can, then A becomes the instant winner, because we can get all the way to the hacker without raising any suspicion. Otherwise, if we have a fluent Spanish speaker or if it's not an instant red flag to call at the door and speak English with a Central/Northern European accent, then we can go with B. C is most likely to have us noticed by someone and have the police on our asses.

Next topic: who? If possible, I would send Laukaitis and Muller to do it, have Westgard be the getaway driver and have Borg sit in the back with a rifle, ready to shoot if the shit hits the fan. Borg has proven himself to be an utterly shit undercover agent. He seems like a rigid simple-minded country bumpkin. We have to make sure he's going to always be in roles that need him to accurately stalk and shoot motherfuckers, nothing else. His only saving grace was that he was Swedish, which helped with the librarian lady, but the chances of that happening again are slim to none. Now, Westgard isn't the subtle type, so, unless she can silently break locks, she won't be of much help, so she'll be best behind the wheel (with Borg being the least experienced driver and all). Now, in the field, Muller seems like a smart-ass, so, if he can speak Spanish, or if him talking English won't be a dead giveaway, then he might be the one to talk his way into the hacker's apartment. Laukaitis will be definitely able to subdue the hacker in hand-to-hand combat, he is the type that gets into bar fights, so he's not the choir-boy type, like Borg, and if he is cool and collected enough to handle explosives, he'll be cool enough to handle his shit while we make our way to the hacker's apartment. If we can't send Laukaitis and Muller, then the best option is the one where we have two people in the field and two in the van. That is option 2. I would take Laukaitis with Westgard and leave Muller as the getaway driver. Laukaitis may use his MCA-like physique to charm our way into the building, or Westgard could start bumping some locks. Either way, when we get to the hacker, he'll stand no chance against two CQB specialists, and we can just pick up and leave with him and all his hardware because of our physical strength. Having 3 people in the field (3.) is too conspicuous while sending a single one (1. and 4.) offers us no fault tolerance.

Finally, the wallet. Keeping it as a souvenir seems like a bad idea. If we get caught, that's proof that we were up to no good at the university, which can be the thread the cops ca pull on and unravel our whole operation. Leaving it in the restaurant isn't a good idea either, because it clearly says that we stole it to get access to restricted areas and that it wasn't just a common mugging. If we just ditch it somewhere randomly, it will seem like a common mugging. We should make sure we get all the money and leave everything else in it, including the university keycard (after wiping all fingerprints). That way it would be much more difficult for anyone to connect the mugging to to anything else.

So, taking all of this into account, and unless Hellraiser gives us some extra details, my vote is:

Had to chuckle at this. And you're right, we've tended to select him for every single task just because he came top in the shooting stats. Think I'll promote Laukaitis from 2nd to 1st choice in my vote.

Oskaras

Tough decision. I can't see the door-to-door salesman act working too well on a basement dweller hacker who probably only leaves home when absolutely necessary. Likewise we'll have less trouble from the neighbours at night so I'd prefer to not be dependent upon whenever the hell he leaves home.

I'd say only bring Oskaras as he's the strongest, Borg is too moral and we need Muller as driver.

I really enjoy your "news bits", they do a nice job of fleshing out the setting and contributing to its atmosphere.

The ad about Israeli refugees suggests that the future is highly Codexian.

Music to get you in the right sneaky mood:

Chapter XI

“Now or never, let’s move out!” You tell Oskaras as you open the van’s door. He follows you eagerly and without question.

The street is filled with shadows cast by the streetlights, they are your only companions here. An ever present orange glow emanating from the lamps engulfs the neighborhood, their brilliance is staving off the darkness of the night. The target is just in front of you, a simple two-level small house with a hydrogen scooter chained to the fence surrounding it. No noticeable entry alternatives to the main door.

You remain vigilant, all it takes is one mistake to cause somebody to call the local police. Silently and gracefully you get over the fence, Oskaras just a step behind you. Despite his obvious body mass he manages to remain stealthy, at least for now. The door is in front of you.

Oskaras watches your back as you grab the locksmith kit. Carefully you manipulate the mechanism of the mechanical lock, you feel you’re just about to open it. But like Sisyphus of ancient myth, just when you are about to open it something goes wrong every time.

“Fucking cat, get off the damn stairs!” Somebody shouts from inside the building, it must be your target, it’s walking down the stairs probably alarmed by your attempt at picking the lock.

“Quick, hide behind the corner I’ll ambush him if he opens the door down.” You whisper to Oskaras, he does as you command.

The door opens, a woman in her mid-twenties appears dressed in a night robe, long black curly hair nearly covering her entire face and the neural-linked spectacles on it. A thin data cable runs between her glasses and a neural port somewhere on the back of her head, hidden beneath a mass of dark hair. She pushes her hair aside just as you jump at her, noticing you at the very last moment.

“Crazy bitch!” She yells as she shoves you away and runs inside leaving the door open, you and Laukaitis follow her.

“Fuck you crazy people, I’m calling the cops!” She yells again as she frantically runs up the stairs.

You nearly trip over a black cat as you chase her, the feline seems rather fond of this part of the house. A loud sound echoes in the house as she slams a door somewhere on the upper floor. Even more noise fills the building, as she shoves some furniture in panic to barricade the door.

“Police! Somebody has broken into my house, Calle de Allemania 191! Please come quickly, this crazy lady wants to kill me!” You hear her terrified plea for help as she calls the cops.

Another loud sound, this time of the wooden door and the shelves she put behind it breaking apart under the force of your ArmStrong limb. Splinters litter the floor in the locked room.

“Go away you fucking cyborg! I did nothing to you!” She yells again from behind the still locker door.

You and oskaras push, shoving the ruined furniture away. She sits curled up in a corner, clinging to a top of the line Xin-Zheng phone with her hands, absolutely terrified of what has transpired.

“Leave me alone, please!” She begs as tears run down her cheeks.

“Gag her and get her out, I’ll get the data!” You order.

“Germans? Fuck! Fuck! Please, it was just a job I failed. I couldn’t do it, the system…” Her words turn into incomprehensible gibberish as Oskaras gags her.

Quickly you plug in the uplink and turn it on. You get a call, Adam’s augmented face appears.

“Look for data devices fast. The police knows you’re here, they’re en route.” He tells you.

A coffee mug flies, propelled by your cybernetic arm, and shatters against the wall. Other objects cluttering the desk next to the hacker’s computer soon meet a similar fate, as you frantically look for any kind of memory device. Meanwhile McKay is copying the computer’s contents via the uplink.

Scheisse!” You curse, as you just barely hear the wail of police cars in the distance. You grab what you can, brutally unplug the uplink and run.

“Did you get everything?” You ask the ECK SysOp.

“Of course not! I am not that efficient! We have partial data, not sure if any of it is useful, not yet. This requires further analysis.” He tells you as you jump over the stairs and the same damn cat as before. As you land your knee hurts a bit. However you ignore the pain, you experienced far worse after all.

The wailing gets louder and louder, the adrenalin levels in your blood get proportionally higher and higher. They’re near, luckily their sound is coming from the other direction of the street. You jump into the van’s back door, Oskaras and the tied up hacker are already there. A blue and red glow reflects of its inner walls.

“Drive!” You shout as you slam the rear doors of the van. The wailing gets quieter, but it is still there. Muller hits the gas pedal as hard as he can, the sudden acceleration makes your shoulder collide with the van’s doors bruising it a bit.

“How many of them are there?!” You ask.

“I see two cars, regular cops! Nothing fancy, about 8 or 10 year old Maibatsu Striders turned into cop cars.” Sven answers.

“Can we lose them?!” You yell into Paul’s ear, he doesn’t seem pleased by it.

“Depends on how persistent they are, we’ve got enough fuel for at least 200 kilometers.” Paul says.

“We could try to ditch them, they don’t have drones or sats that could track us. If we get out of sight and they don’t call in a chopper or VTOL from Madrid before that, we should be safe. Apart from cops and soldiers looking for a similar van around the damn country.” You comment.

“Can’t we slow them down somehow? Shoot their tires or something?” Sven suggests.

“That would probably just piss them off more, not to mention hitting tires isn’t that easy!” You explain. “You watched too many damn movies.”

“Hey, I could try!” He replies confidently.

“McKay! You got any ideas?” You ask the hacker who is still on an open channel.

“We could exploit the backdoor we left in the Toledo network.” He mentions.

“Why didn’t you do that yet? I thought you were efficient!”

“It was set up in anticipation of an investigation into the affair, should one ever happen.” The SysOp explains. “The assumption was you get out of there with the target, the local law enforcement gets notified of the person’s disappearance somewhere in the future, they investigate and we cause a sudden memory failure if they find anything causing them to lose everything. It is a singular use resource, if we opt to use it now any signs of your inefficiency discovered in the future won’t be annihilated.”

“And they’ll probably figure out that this was more than just a hacker flame war gone offline?”

“A good assumption, however we prefer more efficient methods of solving petty disputes. Like locking somebody in an infinitely looping braindance of tween idol’s Suz33! latest *hit* For3v3r Wu8! xoxo , after reprogramming their neural interface to effectively paralyze them. Which lasts until they expire out of lack of hydrogen monoxide.” He coldly explains, you can’t help but feel that he’s talking as if he did something like this in the past. Another reason never to get an actual neural port and "get interfaced" allowing you to connect to external devices.

Scheisse! Wait, there are some rough *roads* nearby.” You say as you look at the SatMap via your Netlink. “More like dirt paths actually, we could ditch them in one perhaps.”

“You think this car is rally-worthy? It’s a damn van!” The Unteroffizier comments.

“Do you think theirs are? They’re city cops!” You add.

“So? We’ll both fall apart, how will that help us get to the extraction point? We would have better odds in narrow urban streets.” Paul suggests.

“And probably reinforcements on our ass, along with road blocks.”

“You think they’re funded well enough to have cops ready to block us in the town in the middle of the night? There’s only one hundred thousand people living here, and it’s fucking thirldworldia! These assholes are probably the only cops in Toledo that aren’t sleeping now! Better than trying to lose them on the main roads if you ask me.” Muller adds.

You have two old Japanese-made squad cars on your tail. You will…
A)…try to ditch them along the way to your target.
B)…go off-road, there is a nice forest or something close to that nearby. Try to ditch them on the dirt path there.
C)…go off-road, there is a bunch of fields nearby. Try to ditch them there.
D)…go urban, see how the Spanish like those shitty narrow streets they’re so fond of building when they need to chase somebody.

You may use additional *resources* to aid you in losing your pursuers.
1) Shoot their tires, engines or whatever. Anything to slow them down.
2) Tell McKay to use that backdoor, block their digital communications, feed them false data or orders, anything that will get them off your ass.
3) Do both of the above.
4) Don’t bother, the risks are too high even if it would help you ditch the two cars on your ass.

The extraction point is…
I) …at the end of path 1.
II) …at the end of path 2.
III) …at the end of path 3.
IV) …at the end of path 4.
V) …at the end of path 5.

The same risks apply as the last time, in addition to further risks caused by the cops being called. However neither path choice affects your chance of losing the cops now, it is for the future assuming Ida has one that isn’t behind steel bars or six feet under as a result of the current chase. Consult the end of Chapter VIII for details if you need them, see the map below for visual reference.

You have lost a Fate Point: The female hacker’s descent down the stairway would have been too silent for you to notice, if it wasn’t for a certain annoying habit of her cat. This gave you the opportunity to try to ambush her. Unfortunately all things must be in equilibrium and somehow, despite overwhelming odds, your ambush utterly failed. Fate works in mysterious ways indeed.

Things could have gone worse, though I'm not sure how (given that we had one Fate point to save us from total disaster).

I vote B2V. Shooting at the cops would be the best way to make sure the Spanish police will chase us forever. And Path 5 is the only one that makes it unlikely a patrol will later try to pull us over.

D4 is the winning combination here. If we don't aggravate them and make them run through the streets, they should eventually decide to fuck it.

Using McKay's memory wipe should be used as intended: to erase our presence In Spain, not on two tired and apathetic cops.

And finally, the extraction route might as well be the same we used before.

I agree that we shouldn't waste the wipe just yet but I'm not too sure about losing them in the streets. They're locals and probably know the shortcuts around here better than us.

Also, small streets can easily be blocked by a single car or something like it. We'd just have to be slightly unlucky for them to catch us.

Good point. In that case, we're better off going offroad ( Hellraiser, how good is our driver. Good enough to maneuver the forest?), as letting them just smply follow us with A4 could lead them, eventually, to our extraction point. Also, the chase could be spotted by patrols on V, so that is the worst combination.

And if we start shooting... Hoo boy.

Damn, how did we fail so badly? At least we have the hacker, any data that may have been lost she should still know. Hopefully we'll get another chance to earn a fate point soon, otherwise we're completely fucked.

I'm voting for off road fields instead of forest because I don't like the idea of crashing into a tree

Also, this would make one awesome TV series

First off, I'm not so sure about going back the same way we came:

“Path 1, you leave from Ireland and make it to the northern coast near hopefully avoiding Spanish patrols. Their navy should be focused on guarding the south coast. However there is the risk of running into an overzealous Euskal patrol outside their territorial waters. Or Islamic Corsairs from France or England, hopefully they won’t stray that far in fear of Euskal patrols. The Basques may be small but they don’t fool around, not with all the jihadists at their border.”

“Once you land,” he continues, “the roads should be fairly safe but probably guarded. We’re keeping track of checkpoints on the roads using satellites, but the Spaniards may have hidden some from view. There may also be patrols. However you are unlikely to encounter paramilitary types there, the road is the longest though.”

“What about Path 2 and 3?”

“You’ll leave from Corsica, we have a strong grip on the waters there until about halfway to your target. After that you’re at risk of running into corsairs or the bulk of the Spanish fleet. Path 2 makes you set foot in Catalonia, the roads there are good and fairly safe so it’s the fastest way to Toledo. But they’re safe for a reason, they’re patrolled often. There is the risk of being pulled over even if you avoid checkpoints. Path 3 is pretty similar, however there is a key difference. The patrols there are very paranoid about Islamists, so they pull over people a lot more often.”
...
“Where as in the north you would deal with French Jihadists on boats, in the south you have Moroccans and other North African pirates. The key difference is that the French will ask you to convert to Islam at gunpoint, probably kill somebody to show you they’re not joking. The Neo-Berbers as I called them rather steal whatever is valuable, implants, boats, jewelry, women. They’re not very picky, they may even let you go if you give them tribute to a specified account.”

“Doesn’t sound very appealing Major.”

“Pretty much, but odds are they’ll miss your boat at night. Path 4 has more Spanish patrols, but smugglers still get past them. Path 5 is a major smuggling corridor, too few patrols but probably more Berbers. After all it’s closer to the strait and occasionally they seize smaller corp vessels for random.”

“What about the roads?”

“The roads are full of holes which will slow you down, also Islamic militias often clash with Spanish troops in the area. Odds are that whatever patrols they have there will be diverted to fight in one such skirmish. Path 5 is going through a hotter combat zone. Path 4 is a bit better, but that just means you’re more likely to encounter a manned checkpoint or get pulled over.”
...
Bane of the Barbary Coast – Even when the ship is rocking on the waves, you can put a bullet inside of your enemies, raghead pirates in particular. Also all the killing you did while aboard the Elisa, may have spawned some memes and urban legends among the North African pirates and netizens. Your accuracy penalty when firing from a moving vehicle is slightly reduced.

Hellraiser, do checkpoints tend to be a lot more lax when it comes to people leaving Spain rather than entering it? Also, how good is our van at off-road driving and how good is our driving? I believe that Sven's idea to shoot the tires off the cop car is actually not bad and it'll work due to our experiences giving us an edge in shooting from moving vehicles, but the question is whether it's worth risking the cops possibly sending a chopper after us in response. It seems to me that if we lose the cops here successfully and ditch our guns, we can go through one of the safer routes (i.e. Path 2/3/4) without any trouble. If we manage to lose the cops, I think we ought to avoid anything approaching a combat situation, and losing our weapons would be a good first step.

Also, we need to save the ace up our sleeve in the form of McKay for when we more desperately need it, I think:

“It was set up in anticipation of an investigation into the affair, should one ever happen.” The SysOp explains. “The assumption was you get out of there with the target, the local law enforcement gets notified of the person’s disappearance somewhere in the future, they investigate and we cause a sudden memory failure if they find anything causing them to lose everything. It is a singular use resource, if we opt to use it now any signs of your inefficiency discovered in the future won’t be annihilated.”

Yes, we're in a bit of trouble right now, but I think we should save it for a situation like getting pulled over at a checkpoint or something. Without any fate points, we really need McKay as our guardian angel if we are in deep shit.

I'm going to tentatively propose the following, but I am very open to flopping:

B) Going into a forest makes it far less likely for them to find us, but more importantly, if they send any choppers after we shoot at the cop cars, they won't be able to track us. Once we ditch the cops, we'll be far less likely to crash as well.
1) We've developed our skills in this area thanks to our training on the Neinmask and our firefight on the boat, and we have two solid marksmen in Muller and Borg, so I think that this can work.
IV) We'll be going through Spanish waters this way, and we'll have McKay on hand to work his magic if we're in a tight spot.

Muller is arguably a somewhat worse driver than you when it comes to the neinmask. He seems to handle driving a van well for some reason though (I'll explain that in the next update, don't want to spoil).

The van is a 2 or 3 year old GAF (Goa Automobile Factory) Mule IV in good condition, whatever the agents-who-shall-not-be-named did with it they did tried to keep it in good condition. Obviously it has Galileo Sat-Nav. It looks similar to this, albeit with some 2050s aesthetics added:

Rental_Van.jpg

The Maibatsu Striders converted into cruisers the cops are using, look like a futuristic Japanese take on the modern urban cop car. They look faster than they really are though, for reference look up how fast one of the newer revivals of the Lancia Delta (what the cops in potato land "recently" got) can go. Assume it is a similar type of car but that the model is not top of the line, as the Spaniards bought a cheaper variant (so no best engine etc.) for obvious reason. They're not highway chasers like a cop Lamborghini or something.

Technically speaking you rolled a critical failure on a roll that should have succeeded. If you didn't use the fate point to notice the hacker, she would spot you and call the cops while you would still be derping around with the lock. The result would be an even harder roll for the amount of data recovered before the cops showed up.

Bro, you're fucking with us too much. You provide very little information about what each choice entails and then you roll the dice, which means that even if we made the optimal choice by, somehow, reading your mind, we can still critically fuck up. I rage-quit your Riftwalker LP twice because of this and I'm very close to doing it again with this LP.
